    Reminder: Learning Centre entrance

We’d like to kindly remind everyone that when events are taking place in the Museum Conference and Learning Centre, colleagues should use the green gate for access, rather than passing through the Centre, unless you have specific access requirements.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

  • Safe together at BCLM: Working at height – steps and ladders

Safe together at BCLM: Working at height – steps and ladders

Working at height refers to any situation where, without safety measures, a person could fall from a distance which could result in personal injury.

Ladders and step ladders are not banned by “health & safety”, they can provide sensible and practical options for low-risk, short duration tasks as long as a few simple rules are followed.

    • Key Principles:
      1. Consider safer alternatives like scaffold towers or scissor lifts.
      2. Check equipment condition. Ensure the ladder is not damaged, especially the foot, which prevents slipping.
      3. Load capacity matters. Ladders are load-bearing, if unsure about their capacity, don’t use them.
    • Proper Usage:
      • Always secure the ladder (tied off or footed).
      • Never use the top step or place ladders on soft, uneven ground.
      • Keep ladders away from doorways unless the door is locked or guarded.
      • Avoid overreaching, move the ladder instead.
      • Do not carry heavy materials while climbing.
    • Do’s:
      • Wear proper footwear.
      • Block access to passersby.
      • Maintain the 4:1 ratio and three points of contact.
      • Inspect equipment before and after use.
      • Report any concerns to a manager.

Following these simple rules helps ensure safe ladder use for low-risk, short-duration tasks.

  • Colleague pick up and drop off – update

Colleague pick up and drop off – update

Following some feedback about safety on the car park off Tipton Road, please can all colleagues remember that drop offs must be made inside the car park after the barriers. This is particularly important in the morning as deliveries and other vehicles also need to access the Museum by the brown gates.

Any cars or taxis dropping off must be instructed to do this inside the barriers, and not on the slip road or in the cobbled area by the pedestrian gate.

The exit barrier will be open before 10am so that any car or taxi dropping off colleagues can safely turn and leave easily. If for any reason the barrier is closed, you are responsible for making sure your chaperone has exited the car park by holding your colleague pass against the black box on the right of the exit barrier.

All Colleague Briefings – October 2024

As part of our continual programme of ensuring engagement and communication across the Museum’s operational and strategic activity, we will be holding briefings to update all colleagues on the Museum’s progress and the plans for the remainder of 2024, as we head toward our busy winter period.
These briefings will take place on:

    • Saturday 19 October
    • Thursday 24 October
All the briefings will take place in Hall 2 and will commence at 9am, finishing at 9.30am.
    • Many of you will already be scheduled by your line managers to attend one of these sessions. If you have not yet been scheduled, please contact your line manager.
    • All contracted colleagues are mandated to attend these sessions. We would also strongly urge colleagues from both our volunteer and casual community to all attend.

  • Colleague Consultative Forum (CCF) nominations

    Colleague Consultative Forum (CCF) nominations

We are yet to receive nominations for the open CCF representative vacancy in the Casual constituency, therefor, we are recommencing the nomination process.
The closing date for nominations for the Casual constituency will be Wednesday 2 October 2024. Elections will be held following this date if we have multiple candidates for this role. If a candidate for nomination is unopposed, casual constituents will be invited to endorse their candidature.
    If you would like to be considered as a CCF representative for the Casual constituency you will need;
    • To be engaged by the Museum as a casual worker.
    • Have a colleague who is also a casual worker propose your nomination.
    • Have another colleague who is also a casual worker second your nomination.
In the interest of ensuring a cross representation of the Museum, the 2 representatives in the Casual constituency cannot be from the same team. Therefore, nominations will only be accepted from casual workers outside of the Historic Character team.
To put yourself forward, please complete and return a nomination form to the People & Culture team (based at Canalside) either by hand, deposited in the black post box outside the People & Culture office, or via email to [email protected].
  • Summer review

    Summer review

Dear colleagues – it was wonderful to celebrate all that we have achieved together at the Bostin’ Bash this month. That was particularly timely as, with a sold-out Peaky Blinders Night, Halloween Nights, major filming activity and our rich programme of Christmas events coming quickly, we can be so busy preparing to delight our visitors that we need to remember and recognise the effort that goes into our busiest time of the year in the summer.

It’s also important to celebrate that effort in a summer when attracting visitors has proved to be more challenging than hoped for attractions across the UK. You’ll already know we have been no different than many other attractions in confronting these headwinds. Accordingly, while we welcomed 98,678 visitors across July and August, that was down 15% against 2023 and the budget we set ourselves. Challenging attendance means working together on Our Bostin’ Promise will be more important than ever to ensure visitors continue to choose us for their valuable free time.

However, it’s right to observe that whereas many destinations are down on a baseline of 2019, we continue to welcome more visitors than pre-covid, a result of the tremendous growth of our Museum that we rightly celebrated at the colleague party.

It’s also testament to your work that our visitor feedback metrics remain superb, reflected in the accreditation of VisitEngland Quality Assured Visitor Attraction in July. Our overall quality score is 93%, which is our highest score to date and means we will be nominated for a Gold Accolade. We’ve also just heard that we’re finalists in the West Midlands Tourism Awards 2025 for Large Visitor Attraction of the Year.

Thank you again then for your fantastic work this summer. Although attendance has not been what we wanted, the quality of the offer absolutely is. Our visitors, stakeholders and partners recognise this, which is a great platform for what will be a busy autumn and winter ahead.
