We’re deeply saddened to share the news that one of our colleagues – Charlie Millward – passed away in June.
Charlie began his time at the Museum all the way back in 2015 in the role of Demonstrator. During his 9 years with the Historic Character Team, Charlie wore many hats, which saw him in many different roles across the site. Most commonly, however, you would often find Charlie in his usual home at the Mine and Racecourse Colliery area.
Many of you may remember Charlie portraying the key character of Dudley Wood, who was part of the Christmas programme as a facilitator supporting the busy Santa Hunts. In more recent times, Charlie played an important role in bringing the story of Langers Army and Navy stores to life; he contributed some of his own experiences and stories to the building that will be used in training and passed on to future new recruits.
In 2024, Charlie accepted a permanent contract with the Museum, further solidifying his place in the Historic Character team. He further developed his skillset through training to become a guide for school groups. It was wonderful seeing Charlie progress his career with us, which continued to the very end as he still attended work in the weeks before he passed away. This only emphasises his love for the Museum, and we’re so grateful for his unwavering commitment over the years.
Our thoughts are with Charlie‘s wife Carolyn and their family and friends at this time.
We’d like to remind colleagues that the EAP continues to be available for confidential support from trained professionals. You can contact them directly at any time by calling 0800 756 0861, quoting “Perkbox” and “Black Country Living Museum”.

We are pleased to invite you to an open read-through of the script for our next pantomime.
This informal session will take place on:
Dates: Tuesday 14 July & Tuesday 21 July 2026
Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Location: Brook Entrance
This is not a formal audition. It is simply an opportunity for everyone to come together in a relaxed and friendly setting to read through the script, get a feel for the story, and explore the characters.
Together, we’ll discuss which roles people are interested in and agree on a rehearsal schedule, with weekly rehearsals planned from August onwards.
The pantomime performance is scheduled for January 2027, following the completion of Reset.
Whether you are interested in performing, supporting behind the scenes, or simply finding out more about the production, you are very welcome to attend.

We’re excited to launch How Bin Ya? – our new colleague survey.
This is your opportunity to share your views and help shape the future of the Museum. Your feedback will provide valuable insights to help inform future decisions, celebrate what’s working well, and identify where we can improve.
The survey includes questions on topics such as:
The survey is anonymous, so we encourage you to be open and honest in your responses.
👉 Complete the survey here: How Bin Ya – Colleague Survey
Closing date: 20 July 2026
Once the survey has closed, we’ll review the responses and share the key themes and what we’ve learned with everyone by 7 August 2026. We’ll also outline how your feedback will help shape future decisions and improvements.
Thank you for taking part in our first How Bin Ya? survey. Your voice matters, and we hope this becomes an important opportunity for everyone to help shape the Museum’s future.

We are proud to introduce the John Hughes Award, established in memory of John Hughes, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who sadly passed away in 2024. In a generous gesture, John included a legacy gift in his will to support the development of Museum colleagues. Following discussions with his son, Jeremy, we are pleased to launch this award in his honour.
The John Hughes Award is designed to support both personal and professional development by offering funding for a range of opportunities, including qualifications, conferences, workshops, short courses, and research trips.
The award will be available annually for a period of 5 years. Interested colleagues will be required to submit an application for consideration.
Who can apply?
The award is open to all Museum colleagues, including:
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Please note: If there are ongoing concerns about your performance or conduct, the Museum reserves the right to exclude your application from consideration.
Application process
Applications are open from 17 June 2026 to 15 July 2026. Before applying, please discuss your interest with your Line Manager. This is to confirm the opportunity is not a required aspect of your current role which should be funded through other means by the Museum.
Please complete a John Hughes Award Application Form and send this to [email protected]. Alternatively, you can return the application form by hand to the black post box on the ground floor of the colleague entrance to Hartills offices.
Paper copies of the application form can be obtained from the People team.
If you require support in completing your application, please contact the People team or speak to your Line Manager.
What can the award be used for?
The award is intended to support development opportunities not typically funded by the Museum. This can be for personal or professional development and does not have to be directly relevant to the role you undertake at the Museum. Examples may include;
Please note the above list is not exhaustive.
There are no minimum requirements for the development opportunity to be considered, however the maximum contribution per recipient is £500. You can still apply for the award if the opportunity costs in excess of £500, however, if successful, any additional costs must be covered by you.
Selection process
All applications will be reviewed by a panel within one week of the closing date. Applicants will be notified of the outcome shortly thereafter.
Successful applicants will not be able to apply for the award the following year but may reapply in subsequent years.
If you have any questions or you would like further information, please contact the People team.

Roll Up Your Sleeves – May Half Term.
During our May half term programme visitors had the opportunity to explore a range of occupations form the past. They met Alice or Albert Atkins who were about to leave their jobs at Mrs Gregory’s general store, to take a step up the ladder begin their new job as a servant at Himley Hall. Children and a few determined adults had the opportunity to experience what it was like to squeeze up a chimney as a sweep, while dressing for the job was all the rage in Hut 14. The number of activities for children to be involved with went down well.
What we did well:
• The jobs for children to trial. This was a new activity for us and great fun for our son.
• The interaction from the staff, they made our visit very special for our daughter. She got to complete a shopping list in the co-operative and gained job in the shop and was dressed up as a shop worker.
• Variety of activities to see and do, very welcoming atmosphere.
• The entire day was excellent, very impressed from start to finish.
• The staff are absolutely outstanding.
• Water outlet for topping up drinks containers
What we can learn from:
In general, visitors commented on:
• The closure of the mine
• Buildings being closed for lunch breaks
• Not at first oblivious which shops sold the items
• The bus not being able to transport a wheel chair
Well done to all teams and please do complete the survey. For any specific questions on the programme or feedback, please email [email protected]

We have been closely monitoring the continued updates from the Met Office regarding the hot weather conditions forecast for Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 June.
The Museum will remain open, and the adverse weather response group has met and decided on the adaptations outlined below. We’ve been working on these changes so that we can safely open, both to provide a safe working environment for colleagues and a great experience for our visitors.
We have made the following adaptations for our visitors:
For any colleagues who usually work in Canalside Offices, we ask that if you can safely do so, please work from home. This will allow us to make more space in this office for those who are required to work at the Museum to access air-conditioned spaces for hot-desking and for taking breaks. When working from home, please do follow our usual guidance on working safely.
To ensure the air-conditioning is at its most efficient and can provide an adequate cool space for breaks, all windows and blinds must be kept closed in Canalside Offices and air-conditioning must remain on.
For colleagues who are required to be on-site:
If you’re here at the Museum, please remember our top tips for sun safety:
For any colleagues who have any questions or concerns regarding the above, please contact your line manager.
Thank you,
Museum team
