    Festival of Vehicles

    Date and times:
    Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June 10.00 – 5.00pm

    Programme Concept:
    A light touch weekend offer celebrating Black Country Vehicles from our collection. The weekend will include activities for all the family, displays of vehicles around the site and a cavalcade showcasing iconic vehicles from Black Country History.
    Even our horses will get the chance to shine pulling their cart, before we showcase bikes, cars, and finally our ‘specials’ – unique vehicles from our collection that only come out on special occasions.
    We will also play host to a number of vintage vehicles travelling from all over the Midlands and beyond to showcase at BCLM over the weekend!
    For the first time EVER we will be selling our Vehicle Guide, whilst visitors will still be provided with a free trail to make sure they don’t miss any of the fun!

    1960s Staff Survey

    Thank you so much to everyone who took part in and supported our 1960s events this year! We’ve had some really great feedback from visitors!

    In general, visitors gave positive mention to the atmosphere and all of the bands (particularly the Daisy Chains and the Rolling Clones). This year, there was a notable increase in positive comments about the drag artist (and the Gay Flamingo), as well as the characters or “actors” and the “drama” taking place.

    More constructive comments from visitors mentioned the length of the event not allowing them to experience/ see everything, not enough places to sit (especially in the wet weather) and some mentioned food being cold or not up to standard.

    • 96% overall satisfaction rating (80% excellent and 16% good)
    • 90% felt that it was an immersive experience
    • 89% felt they had an opportunity to participate
    • 89% satisfaction with food and drink at the event.
    • 38% of visitors also reported that the event had changed their perception of LGBTQ+ history,  which is up massively from 14% last year (the first time we asked this question).

     “I have always as a member of the LBGT community been extremely PROUD of the men and women who through the 60s were fighting tooth and nail for the freedoms so many LGBT take for granted now… Thank you for showing this side of the 1960s my wife and I hope to see such again when your 60s weekend returns.”

    May Half Term – Roll up your sleeves

    Dates: Saturday 23rd – Sunday 31st May 2026

    Description of programme: Visitors will learn about the many and varied occupations that have made up the Black Country over the decades. Children will discover the difficult lives of working children in the past, their poor working conditions and how education could offer them a way into a different life. Visitors will get the opportunity to try their hand at some occupations from the past and help workers try to improve their working conditions.

  • 1960s Weekend

    1960s Weekend

    Dates: Friday 15th May (evening only), Saturday 16th May (day and evening), Sunday 17th May (day only)
    Description of programme:
    Mod or rocker, Beatles mad or Rolling Stones fan….Visitors will join us in the swingin’ 60s, as this defining decade in British history takes over our museum!
    They will hear their favourite 1960s music played by live bands, explore our 1960s buildings, see vintage vehicles, as well as 60s fashion trends. There will be opportunity to learn about technological advancements, attitude changes and liberation. Visitors will be able to take part in a protest and celebrate England’s World Cup in with our historic characters, as well as dance the night away to their favourite 60s music.

    Programme Concept:

    A light touch weekend celebrating the history and impact of the canal network in the Black Country, as we’re joined by a selection of historic Tug and Day boats

    Visitors can expect to participate in extra activities, meet themed characters and learn more about canal life during the 19th & 20th century.

    • To provide visitors with a family friendly event exploring the different things people have done to look after their health throughout history in the Black Country.
    • To explore accident prevention with the coming of busier roads – Tufty Club.
    • Looking at common home remedies, healthy eating, living conditions (including how they got rid of toilet waste), and fitness and wellbeing activities. Also looking at vaccinations in the IWC and “first aid.”

    Spring In Your Step is a celebration of the new season.

    Out with the old, in with the new…

    The days are getting longer, the bulbs are shooting and the feather dusters are out! Join the Black Country folk as they prepare for the new season, busy cleaning their homes and businesses, using an array of tried and tested methods – some you will have heard of, others you definitely won’t have!

    In keeping with the theme of newness, a young happy couple will be returning to their local chapel to christen their new bundle of joy. The service may be private, but keep an eye out for them as they take some photographs to remember their little ones special day.
