    Black Country History Day

    The Black Country Society and the Centre for West Midlands History at the University of Birmingham are organising this day school which is designed for anyone interested in the history of the area. The Black Country Society, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, promotes interest in the past, present and future of the Black Country.

    The Museum has 10 free tickets available to those that would like to attend Black Country History Day. If you are interested in this event, please complete the form below outlining why you would like to attend. Closing date: Friday 8th September 2017

    Dr Malcolm Dick is Director of the Centre for West Midlands History at the University of Birmingham.

    Graham Worton is Dudley Keeper of Geology and Black Country UNESCO Global Geopark Lead, based at the new Dudley Museum facility at the Dudley Archives and Local History Centre.

    Keith Hodgkins is President of the Black Country Society, Chairman of Tipton Civic

    Society and also Co-chairs the Black Country Society’s Industrial Archaeology Group.  He has written several books about Tipton and has worked for both West Midlands County Council and Wolverhampton City Council as an architect.

    David Mills is Assistant Curator at Walsall Leather Museum. He is the author of two novels, which fictionalise historical stories from our locality, as well as compiling two books of oral history transcripts based on over 100 oral history recordings. He is a graduate of Wolverhampton University and has a MA from Leicester University.

    Judith Davies is researching political, religious and social change in Dudley c.18151865 for a University of Birmingham PhD, after completing the MA in West Midlands History. She is Black Country born and bred and returned to Brierley Hill after retiring as a librarian in Northamptonshire. Judith also volunteers at Dudley Archives.

    Racecourse Colliery Hard Hat Tours – Staff & Volunteer places available

    On various dates between Wednesday 23 August and Sunday 3 September we’ll be running hard hat tours of the Racecourse Colliery restoration work for our visitors (exact dates and times listed below). The tours will explore the history of the Colliery, the reasons for its restoration and the work involved, what’s been done so far, and what’s still to complete.

    Not only does this keep our visitors involved in our current projects but it allows us to test this type of activity in advance of the new physical developments we will be creating as part of BCLM: Forging Ahead.

    We’d like you, our staff & volunteers to be the first to see the work that is taking place on the Colliery. So, if you fancy replacing a flat cap with a hard hat for half an hour at 9am on Tuesday 22 August, please register your interest via Museum Operations Manager, Jon White.

    Places will be limited to 20 but if we get significant interest then we’ll put on another tour for staff & volunteers at a later date.

    Please wear sensible footwear.

    The tours will take place from the Mine Manager’s Office.

    Visitor tours will be limited to 10 places and will take place at 11am, 1pm & 3pm on the following dates:

    • Thursday 24 Aug
    • Friday 25 Aug
    • Monday 28 Aug
    • Saturday 2 Sep
    • Sunday 3 Sep

    More tours are due to take place in the Autumn.

    Peaky Blinders- Volunteers Wanted!

    Staff Volunteering – Peaky Blinders

    Our Peaky Blinders nights are upon us once again and this year we are hosting the event across four evenings, spanning two weekends. Like all of our highly anticipated events, Peaky Blinders is expected to be busy and bustling from start to finish so any help would be gratefully recieved. There are two opportunities available; in the week coming up to the first weekend we would like some help with transforming the site into a place worthy of the Peaky Blinders gang. During the evening events we will need support  across food and drink and  retail and admissions.

    If you are interested in lending a helping hand, please indicate where you would like to volunteer and what times you are available in the forms below. The deadline to sign up is 12 midday on Monday 28th August 2017. Whether for the whole evening or a couple of hours,  we would gladly accept any time you can offer to help make our event a success.

    There are two forms to register interest in volunteering. There is a Peaky Blinders Sign Up form to register interest in volunteering within food and drink or retail and admissions and there is a Peaky Blinders Prep Sign Up form, this is for those that are interested in assisting Jane Allcock during the day with the prep for the evening events and will involve set-dressing. Please ensure that the correct form is completed.

  • Useful Information – AEOM Conference Update

    From 21 – 25 August we will be hosting 130 international delegates for the biennial Association of European Open Air Museums Conference.

    Open Air Museum professionals from Europe, Australia, Canada, the US and the UK (including some of our own staff) will be taking part in a variety of workshops, presentations, dinners and guided tours at BCLM and Ironbridge Gorge Museums as they explore the key theme of the Conference, ‘The Resilient, Entrepreneurial Museum and Master Planning.

    The conference sessions taking place here have been added to the Museum-wide calendar and you can find further information about the programme in the Useful Information section of the Documents tab above.

    We look forward to welcoming our international colleagues to BCLM in just a couple of weeks’ time!

  • 2018: A Year of Celebrations – call out for events ideas

    Now we’re in full swing of our Let’s Get Sporty* summer, we’re beginning to turn our attention to how we can make our 2018 Events Programme the best yet and we need your help!

    2018 marks our Museum’s 40th anniversary (since opening to the public for the first time in 1978) and so the events programme will be set within an overarching context for the year of ‘Celebrations’.

    If you would like to see us celebrate something specific as part of our 2018 Events Programme please take the time to complete the Events Proposal Form below. The deadline for submitting completed forms is Noon on Wednesday 23 August. All submitted events proposals will then go to the next meeting of the Events Programming Group on Tuesday 29 August for consideration.

  • Museums Association Conference 2017

    Museums Association Conference – 16-18 November 2017

     

    The MA conference takes place in Manchester this year with a packed programme of events across the course of the three days.

     

    We are offering 2 staff the opportunity to attend this, with all travel and accommodation provided. All you need to do is complete an application and provide us with some information as to how you think this will be of benefit to you in your role here at BCLM.

  • 1940s Weekend – thanks to all

    Dear Colleagues

    The 1940s weekend was one of the busiest weekends the Museum has ever had, and I’m not surprised the feedback from visitors was so positive – if you haven’t seen it, do check out our Facebook page,  Twitter feed and Tripadvisor reviews.  I think the range, quality and energy of what the Museum offered our visitors was exceptional. You’ll appreciate by now, that increasing the scale and ambition of our events programme is an important part of our continued and future success.  However, I do realise that many staff – in hot and humid weather – worked incredibly hard to make the weekend a success, and I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and admiration for the commitment shown.

    We now have another six very busy weeks ahead of us, when we can expect to welcome over seventy-thousand visitors to the Museum, to keep an already good year for us on track.  July has got off to a very good start, and although it represents hard work, I have every confidence that we will see that level of attendance over the weeks of the summer holiday.  This day-to-day success of providing great visitor experiences is as equally important as the physical development of the site; the planning for which goes on apace, with c90% of the necessary funding now in place.

  • Carers Day – Sun 11 Jun

    A carers event will be taking place at the Museum on Sun 11 Jun (10:30am – 3:30pm) to celebrate Carers Week.

    The aim of the day is to celebrate people that provide unpaid care and support to a loved one, relative, friend or neighbour.

    Activities include: performance by DYnamics Rock & Pop Choir; traditional rag rugging workshop sessions; and a carers information market in the main visitor reception.

    All activities are free of charge, however normal admission prices will apply if visitors wish to visit the Museum.

    One essential carer can go free when accompanying the person they are caring for.

    Advance booking is essential.

  • Life’s a Beach – Black Country Touring Performance

    Black Country Touring will be rehearsing and performing a new show at the Museum this month. The new show will be launched at the So Festival in Skegness in July 2017 and will draw on stories of seasonal visitors and year round residents. The show will be performed in three specially created caravans.

    The Museum are hosting Black Country Touring for their rehearsal period (Mon 5 Jun – Thu 29 Jun) in the compound behind Old Birmingham Road and they will be hold two preview days on Sat 24 & Sun 25 June for visitors and VIPs.

    Admission Details

    Normal entry charges apply for visitors. Actors, support crew and VIPs for the performance will sign in at Reception.

    Car/Coach Parking

    Main Car Park Available. Parking charge on Main Car Park applies for visitors, actors, support crew and VIPs will be provided with tokens at Reception.

    Rehearsal Period

    Staff and volunteers are welcome to visit the caravans during rehearsal and speak to Black Country Touring about the project.

    Black Country Touring will be using the rooms above Doos for breaks as well as storing a limited amount of costume in the costume room.

    Performance

    There will be a series of performances on 24 & 25 June. The caravans will be moved to the Limekilns at the  back of the WI and visitors will be encouraged to drop in and experience the show.

    Black Country Touring will invite a limited number of VIPs to the preview.

    There will be BSL Interpreters available on Sunday 25 June.
