  • Join in the fun & games – Staff Social (Tue 19 June)

Following on from the success of January’s event, we will be holding another staff social on Tue 19 June.

All staff and volunteers are invited to the event which will be held in Folkes Park from 5:30pm until approx. 8:00pm.

You can join in the quiz (non-brewery related this time!) and games such as croquet, skittles and giant jenga. Or simply relax and enjoy an evening of music and light refreshments over a friendly chat with colleagues across the Museum. We hope to see you there!

If you have any questions about the event, you can contact Lucy Bennett or Ben Careless in the HR Team.

We hope that as many of you as possible are able to join us.

    Enjoy!

In the case of inclement weather the event will take place in the W.I.

  • Update – 2018 Visitor Attendance

    Update – 2018 Visitor Attendance

Now that Easter and the May Day Bank Holiday have passed, we are at a point in the year where we can directly compare our visitor attendance with last year.

And, I’m pleased to say that, despite an unusually wet Easter, attendance levels to date are very slightly ahead of the same point last year.

This is an excellent position for us – and one that I’m told is not shared by many other outdoor attractions.

Similarly encouraging is the rate of ticket sales for our evening events with this weekend’s Red by Night joining our four Peaky Blinders Nights in the list of sold out events.

As we move ever closer towards our peak summer season, I would like to thank you for all your contributions to date.

    Andrew

  • Opportunity – Get involved in creating sustainable fashion!

S4S Stitched-Up! Action for Sustainable Fashion is a community activism project run by S4S: a coalition of fashion designers, community groups, activists, academics and makers who are ‘Designing a Sensibility for Sustainable Clothing’ by promoting creative approaches to re-use, repair, recycling and sustainable design on a local, national and global scale.

S4S Stitched-Up! are running workshops for a research project into sustainable clothing and are currently recruiting for people to take part on the project.  Participants will join  a series of workshops with S4S Stitched-Up! designers to learn new skills, share ideas, make, mend and generally get creative about sustainable clothing.  Workshop places are open to staff and volunteers at the Museum, travel expenses will be paid and there will be a reward of shopping vouchers for taking part in the research.

BCLM is hosting five workshops on Fridays (day time) from 25 May and workshop participants will be working with vintage patterns and recycled fabrics to make clothing for the 1940s Weekend in July. The project group will explore the approach taken to clothes in the wartime years with the ‘Make do and Mend’ campaign.   Participants will be able to visit the museum during the 1940s weekend with a free day ticket on either 14 or 15 July to wear their newly created items in context .

The project will ask participants to evaluate how taking part in the workshops has influenced the sustainability of their clothing choices.

Places are limited so if you want to take part in this exciting project please contact Katie at [email protected] to secure your workshop place.

S4S Stitched Up! is part of a research project called S4S – Designing a Sensibility for Sustainable Clothing and we are working in partnership with Exeter University and a community group in Penryn, Cornwall, who are also doing workshops. The website is currently under construction, but you can find more information on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

  • Volunteers- We Need You!

The Christmas events are fantastic fun for all of those that attend….the aftermath and the clean up operation not so much! (Although there will be mince pies!)

The cleaning team do a great job of ensuring that the Museum maintains high standards of cleanliness but they could really do with some extra help after the Christmas evening events and we are appealing for some goodwill from staff to volunteer to help on the mornings of 9th,10th, 16th and 17th December between 8am-10am.

If you are able to offer to help please let HR (Michaela) know ASAP in person, via email or by telephone.

    Thank you!

  • An Evening of Light & Sound – Sat 18 November

An Evening of Light & Sound – Sat 18 November

Some of you have already taken part in filming and recording for the installations of our Arts Council funded Arts project – thanks again to those of you who have!  The time is now coming to publicly reveal the launch event, ‘An Evening of Light & Sound’ which is a free entry event taking place on Saturday 18 November.

The project will see projections of light and sound across the Museum including a SlipGrid wall in Admissions, massive projections on the Limekilns, immersive work under the Rolling mill, touch instigated light and sound at Lenches, plus a number of other exciting pieces including possibly the smallest cinema in the world! All of the installations will be made up of sights and sounds filmed and recorded here at the museum, either by the artist himself, groups who have taken part in workshops, or the images you and the public are currently loading to Instagram.

Everyone is welcome at the event so long as they pre-book their free tickets. Booking will go live publicly on Monday 23 October but tickets will be available to book for staff and volunteers at www.bclm.com/lightandsound from this Friday 20 October.

We would also  love staff & volunteers to take part in the full ‘dress rehearsal’ on the evening of Friday 17 November where we invite you to take photos and film for use by the artist, Andy Mckeown during the launch the following night. More info about the dress rehearsal to follow.

Image above – a sneak peak of the scale of imaging being used. This is a photograph from our archive, projected on the Limekilns during a test run last week…I hope it gives a flavour of the show to come

  • Peaky Blinders’ Nights – What a Performance!

Peaky Blinders’ Nights – What a Performance!

With ticket sales of over 8,000 across the four nights and trading income considerably ahead of budget, this year’s Peaky Blinders’ Nights proved popular than ever and that’s undoubtedly down to such a truly phenomenal staff effort.

As one Peaky fan put it:

We are big fans of the show and were blown away by the effort put into this event, right down to the small details.

There’s no doubt that four nights across two weeks is incredibly tough on staff and so it really is a huge thanks to everyone that played a part in making each of these nights such a blinder!

  • Walsall Silver Threads Tapestry Exhibition

Between 5 Sep and 18 Sep 11 unique tapestries representing the six towns and other areas in Walsall Borough will be on display in Hall 1. The tapestries reflect the borough’s living history, diversity and commonality; acknowledge the past, reflect the present and embrace the future.

Each one of the tapestries represents at least 5000 sewing hours clocked up by an array of volunteers. The final inspiration of Walsall Councils Creative Development Team, the project ran for nearly a year and involved hundreds of local people, both as story tellers and stitchers.

People came form far and wide during the first three months of the project, to have their say on what should feature on each tapestry. Artist Hunt Emerson turned their stories into illustrations which were then lovingly stitched into more than 12 Square metres of fabric.

Each tapestry features a different area of the borough, capturing Walsall’s living history and diverse geographical communities. The Willenhall Tapestry features the Locksmiths Cottage (which is now run by BCLM). A sewing event was held at the cottage involving ladies from the local Gurdwara, which is also featured on the Willenhall Tapestry, who were able to see the history brought to life in the cottage and lock workshops.

The Project was the brainchild of Creative Development Team Manager Maxwell Bailey who wrote a successful funding bid to Arts Council England. Sadly Max died before seeing the final tapestries completed, having fought a 4 year battle with cancer.

The continued tour of the tapestries is supported by Walsall Creative Factory CIC and Creative Black Country funded by The Arts Council England also by the sales of postcard packs.

To find out more about more please visit www.creativefactory.org.uk or Walsall Silver Thread Facebook page

The exhibition is free of charge and it located in the exhibition hall in our main visitor reception building.

General admission prices to apply if visitors would like to visit the rest of the Museum.

  • Christmas Tickets On Sale 1 Sep

As you know, tickets for our Christmas events programme go on sale from Friday 1 September. We are therefore expecting the number of calls into the Museum and traffic to the website to be significantly higher than normal. The Bookings office will be open on Saturday this weekend and Natalie B and D will be taking calls.

Andy is moving the Bookings lines over to a separate call queuing system to hopefully reduce the impact on the main museum telephone lines. We also have some fantastic software called “Queue-IT” which creates a virtual queue for people trying to access our ticketing site and will therefore ensure the website is not overloaded. We will obviously update the messages on these platforms to explain what is happening. Whilst nobody likes a queue, these systems ensure that we process tickets fairly, on a first come first served basis and (hopefully) prevents any technical problems that we or the customer might otherwise have experienced.

Hopefully callers will do the very British thing and wait patiently in the queuing system however I would anticipate some might try to get through by any means possible! If this happens, can you please politely explain that they need to call the Bookings line – 0121 520 8054 or suggest that they book online? Please do not try and transfer them internally as this will mean that they have skipped the queue and we obviously want the process to be fair. If they do mention the queue, again, please just re-assure them that we will answer calls as quickly as possible but strongly suggest that they book online as this is likely to be quicker – www.bclm.com.

Whilst I don’t expect you to have in depth conversations with callers about the Events programme or ticket sales, it might just be worth you familiarising yourself with the dates and prices for the events (below), just in case. Please note the Early Bird rates are on Halloween tickets only and there is NO Family Night this year.

I’m sure the Marketing & Comms Team won’t mind me also mentioning that they will be extremely busy responding to social media feedback and queries, too.

Please purchase Staff and Volunteer Event tickets through the Retail & Admissions Team Managers – please read the staff ticket policy.

If anybody has any queries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
