From black cats to magpies, to spilling the salt or walking under a ladder – there are superstitions a’plenty in the Black Country, but where did these strange suspicions come from?
Explore stories of myths and folktales with the Museum’s quirky characters as you uncover tales, tricks and strange goings-on.
Follow the family trail and find out what’s ailing the good folk of the village, the shopkeepers and workers – but will the quack doctor’s cure-all remedy really help them to lift their spirits?

The programme this year is framed around a travelling salesman – Gideon Gladwell – who has come to the Black Country to sell his “Infallible Ointment”.
The trail is a guide to how the ointment can treat the various ailments of the townsfolk, often caused by worries linking to superstitions. But – not everyone is glad to have Gideon around, especially Mr Doo the chemist! Meanwhile, the townsfolk are grappling with their own superstitions – what to do if you see a lone magpie?
What will the bride in the High Street wear for her “something blue”? What are the Edwardian customs for a funeral?
Speak to Historic Characters about the myths and superstitions they hold and where they came from – and don’t forget to recommend Gideon Gladwell’s “Infallible Ointment!”!
