  • All Colleague Briefings – August 2023 -New Date Added!

    We have added an additional day to the all colleague briefings to allow anyone who has been unable to catch the other dates the opportunity to attend as well as those unavailable during the week.

    As part of our continual programme of ensuring engagement and communication across the Museum’s operational and strategic activity, we will be holding briefings to update all colleagues on the Museum’s progress and the plans for the remainder of 2023, a critical year following the opening of the row of six buildings in our new street. These briefings will take place on:

    • Tuesday 1st August 2023
    • Thursday 3rd August 2023
    • Saturday 5th August 2023
    • Wednesday 9th August 2023

    All the briefings will be held in the Museum’s Conference & Learning Centre (Hall 2), and will commence at 9.00, finishing at 9.30.  Many of you will already be scheduled by your line managers to attend one of these sessions. If you have not yet been scheduled, please contact your line manager.

    All contracted colleagues are mandated to attend these sessions. We would also strongly urge colleagues from both our volunteer and casual community to all attend.

    You only need to attend one of the briefing sessions.

    Refreshments will be provided in the Hall 2.

  • Halesowen College Employer Awards

    Halesowen College has highlighted the achievement of its cornerstone Employers with a special awards ceremony, where the Black Country Living Museum was presented with the ‘Supported Internship Employer of the Year’ Award.

    Representatives of the Museum, Ricki Boden, Volunteer Coordinator and Susannah Green, People & Culture Advisor, accepted the award on Thursday 13 July at a ceremony attended by James Morris, MP for Halesowen – for the work we have been doing in partnership with Halesowen College. We look forward to our next cohort of learners in September.

    Claire Hawkes, Supported Employment Coordinator said:

    “The Supported Internship of the year award was presented to BCLM for their constant and conscious effort to implement required reasonable adjustments to enable our supported interns to feel confident, engaged and productive within the setting. Each intern’s mentor received training and has worked meticulously with the Job Coach and young people to generate valuable resources tailored to the way each intern learns best. This has created an environment where diversity is celebrated, we are proud to continue to work with them as one of our cornerstone employers.”

  • Summer “Tunes Through Time” – programme overview and trail

    Dates: Saturday 22nd July – Sunday 3rd September

    Concept: From gramophones to electric guitars, from Thomas Edison’s recordings to Elvis Presley. Explore the eras, Look, Listen and Feel to discover what will be your favourite style of music. This Summer Holiday we’re exploring the journey of music throughout the decades including industrial Folk songs, music sheets, the gramophones, the radio and MORE. Come and see the musical folk of the Black Country and join us for a song or two!

  • Aegon Pension Letter

    Aegon Pension Letter

    It seems that colleagues who are members of the Aegon pension scheme have recently received a letter in the post suggesting a new investment contract has started.

    Aegon have advised that this is an IT glitch which is currently being investigated and that the letter can be ignored.

    They have apologised for any confusion this may have caused.

    Dudley Grand Prix – Fri 14 July

    Dudley will welcome the British Cycling Dudley Grand Prix this Friday, 14 July, from 4.00pm. The Museum is not on the route, but it could impact visitors travelling to, or departing from, us.

    What is the British Cycling Dudley Grand Prix?

    The town centre will be transformed into a fully barriered racing track for six thrilling races featuring some of the UK’s top road cycling stars.

    Visitors will also be able to enjoy live music, food and an incredible atmosphere in a brilliant free night out for all the family – with free parking in council-owned car parks in the town centre to make it easier to come along.

    “Dear Colleagues

    On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my admiration and grateful thanks for all that has been achieved with Forging Ahead; culminating in the launch of The Row of Six this weekend.

    The Board has been monitoring this extraordinary transformation for the last six years. The complexity and challenge of the project has ranged across so many disciplines, including collecting, research, fundraising, finance, negotiation, legal, construction, storytelling, interpretation and character development, training, logistics and planning, marketing, stakeholder management – the list goes on. It has been a Master Class. The Board is so proud of what has been achieved and so should you all.

    The next phases, including the reconstruction of Woodside Library, will be equally exciting and so very important to the continued success and impact of the Museum.

    Well done to everyone involved in the filming with The One Show last week, what a success!

    One of our Trustees, Sally Bourner, gave some lovely feedback that we wanted to share with you all.

     

    “What a beautiful piece of TV on The One Show this evening. Watching the power of living history through the stories being told made me feel really emotional. I shed a tear listening to the conversation and watching the interaction between Cynthia Burgin and Emily Banks behind the counter in Burgin’s. A very poignant, powerful and special moment that shows just how much bringing history to life matters. 

    And Carol you did a top job with your interview. Nice work well done. 

    I cannot put into words the immense pride and appreciation I have for everyone in Team BCLM who have and will continue to put their heart, soul and consummate professionalism into realising the 1940’s—1960’s High Street. What a landmark moment for BCLM. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.

    With my very best wishes for an amazing day on Saturday and for very exciting times ahead.”

  • Staff Discounts

    Staff Discounts

    The Enterprise team is excited to launch a new till system across all food and beverage units w/c 3rd July.

    This follows a great amount of work from many teams over numerous months, to select, develop and implement this new system.

    The team has taken the opportunity to carefully censor-check all product pricing as items and recipes are loaded into the new database.  

    Following this careful review, the temporary trial of a higher, 50% rate of staff discount specifically for food made at the Museum will end on 3rd July. Staff discounts across all food and drink products (with the exception of alcohol, where no discount exists), will revert to the standard 25% discount.
