  • Volunteers wanted for photography – Tuesday 6 June

On Tuesday 6 June, Audiences & Communications will be hosting a photography morning against the six new shops, whereby we intend to stage a ‘morning out at BCLM’. A professional photographer will be on-site taking staged photos of ‘visitors’ enjoying time on the new street; interacting with historic characters, enjoying demonstrations etc.

We are looking for volunteers (staff, as well as friends, family and young children) to act as visitors in the photos. This would involve attending the Museum on Tuesday 6 June from around 9am-12noon, and appearing in staged photos.

In order to accurately reflect the Museum’s audience, we are keen to ensure a variety of different people are represented in the photos. We would like to include people of all ages and ethnicities, as well as people from the LGBTQ+ community.

If you or anyone you know (family members, friends and young children are more than welcome) would like to take part, please register your interest by emailing [email protected] by Monday 5 June.

  • Weekly Ops – how to get involved

Weekly Ops – how to get involved

With various new starters joining the Museum recently, we thought that it would be useful to remind everyone about our ‘Weekly Museum Activity Update’, also known as ‘Weekly Ops’.

It has been flagged in recent meetings that information is getting missed and attendance can be low. Therefore, please read the following information carefully and familiarise yourself with the current process of Weekly Ops.

    What is Weekly Ops?

Weekly Ops is a great form of communication for all teams across the Museum where you will find out what’s happening at the Museum over the next seven days.

Teams will individually share department headlines, new future dates for the diary and team updates – such as any annual leave, work-from-home requests and any absences – on a PowerPoint slide.

At least one member of each team is required to be present so they can share updates on specific projects.

    When is it?

Every Wednesday at 10am on Teams. Each team is required to fill in their slide by 5pm on the previous Monday. This is done via Teams – Weekly Museum Activity Update>General.

The latest PowerPoint slide will be available for you to edit at the bottom. Please see below:

How do I get on the invite list?

Your Line Manager will need to request an invite from Nick Sellers, Head of Museum Operations.

What do I do with the information?

By attending Weekly Ops, you are the representative for your team and must pass on key information to the rest of your team. Therefore, please take notes throughout. After receiving feedback, many teams communicate key information via an email to their team or via a separate Teams channel for their team. Use whatever works best for you and your team.

Any questions, please email [email protected].

  • BCLM Costume Policy

Earlier this year, the Historic Character and Costume Working Group reviewed and updated the Museum’s Costume Policy to make it more inclusive and relevant to Forging Ahead.

The team would like to brief all staff on the Costume Policy and inform all that the request forms, Costume Request Form and Specialist Costume Request form, are now available.

Additionally, if you require historic costume, you will need to complete one of the forms and have this approved by your supervisor or manager, who will forward it to the Costume Team.

Former Research and Interpretation Coordinator, Claire Robinson, prepared an informative presentation on the new policy. The presentation also includes the style guide Hayley and her team are working towards, and include advice/inspiration on hairstyles and accessories. Please read this thoroughly.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected]

    Thanks.

  • An update from Andrew Lovett, Chief Executive – All Colleague Briefing (April/May 2023)

    Visitor attendance

To Sunday 23 April, we have welcomed 75,600 visitors. That is 9% ahead of the target we set. We are 5% ahead of this time last year.

We’ve already had a few days where we’ve welcomed over 2,000 visitors in a single day (during Easter). We have budgeted to expect to welcome over 2,000 visitors for 51 days, including our evening events programme. There are 33 days when we expect to welcome 2,000+ during the day and 17 days where we will welcome 3,000+ visitors, including those attending evening events.

Growth is coming from people benefitting from using their Unchained Annual Passes, and we continue to see visitors booking tickets later and later – a national trend.

    Recent visits

We’ve had a couple of high-profile visits to the Museum recently. First, we had Prime Minister Rishi Sunak followed by our Patron of at least 43 years, HRH The Duke of Gloucester.

    Environmental

We have become a member of a West Midlands Sustainability Group, led by Paul Crofts (Chief Operating Officer). We have also formed an internal Steering Group to press ahead with priorities and actions we have already been taking.

    Forging Ahead

Museum teams are taking over from Balfour Beatty, the construction contractor; more and more work is being directly managed by us. We are continuing to develop new costumed characters associated with the new developments. The new Learning Centre is now open, as is the new Changing Places in the Brook building.

    Strategy

Thanks to those staff and volunteers who attended the in-person consultation session and contributed to the online consultation. This was circulated to external stakeholders as well; we received over 1.500 responses from all sorts of stakeholders. The values that resonate most strongly with staff and volunteers are: 1st – inclusive and welcoming, 2nd – collaboration, 3rd – learn and be curious, 4th – pride, and 5th – maintain our financial independence.

  • Help us prepare for Deaf Awareness Day!

This year, we’re inviting staff and volunteers to brush up their skills and take part in a British Sign Language workshop. Come along and join in the fun by taking part in an interactive session led by a qualified British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter.

At the Museum, we want to be as accessible and inclusive as possible in everything we do. Get involved and learn a handful of British Sign Language words to help us become more inclusive, giving all of our visitors a great visitor experience.

    Workshop Dates:

    • Wed 3 May 5-6pm – Located in Hall 2
    • Thu 4 May 5-6pm – Located in Hall 2

    Additional Details:

    • Deadline sign up: Tue 2nd May
    • Cakes and light refreshments will be available
    • Please add your name to the sign-up sheet to reserve your place

    Thank you.

  • Share your thoughts to inform our new map!

Share your thoughts to inform our new map!

As more phases of our new development start to open, the Audiences & Communications team is leading the creation of a new general map and access map, working with a design agency that has created visitor maps for Chester Zoo and Imperial War Museum.

The team has compiled a short survey so that you can share your thoughts on how the new maps should be designed. Please note there is nothing to view or download.

Please complete our questionnaire online. The survey will close on Tuesday 2 May at midday.

Please note that while we value all feedback, the A&C team will hold the final decision.

Thank you for taking part, and apologies to everyone who was unable to access the online questionnaire when they first tried.
