  • Christmas Greenery Appeal 2018

    Christmas Greenery Appeal 2018

It’s that time of year again when we start thinking about decorating the buildings ready for the festive season.  We use traditional greenery for many of the houses and shops, so we are appealing for your help.

Do you have rampant ivy or holly that needs pruning?  Do you have excess Christmas/ fir tree cuttings?  Or do you have other evergreen materials you can spare?

If you have any of the above we would be grateful for donations of greenery.  The Santa Hunts and ‘Christmas in the Home’ start on Saturday 24 November this year, so we will start preparing key buildings from Monday 19 November and continue the following week.  We may also need additional greenery in December, to refresh the buildings.

If you can bring in any materials you can deposit them outside the staff Guide Hut and the Collections team will collect them.

During the festive period, once buildings are decorated, if you are looking for greenery to refresh your building we will store surplus greenery on the first floor of the Cast iron House.

If you have any questions about decorating the buildings for Christmas, you can ask Clare (Mon-Wed), Helen (Mon-Fri) or Jess (Wed-Fri) in the Collections team or email [email protected]

    Thank you

A double page spread showcased 40 years of Museum life, peppered with interviews from Museum staff and volunteers.

Thanks to everyone who took part in making such a great feature!

If you missed it, it’s available on the Express & Star website

Please note certain groups are eligible or a free flu jab from your GP or local participating outlet.

Therefore, we would also advise you to check the NHS website to find out whether you automatically qualify for a free jab via your GP/local provider: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/who-should-have-flu-vaccine/

  • Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme 2018 – Results

The Museum has achieved a score of 87% in its most recent Visit England quality assessment (VAQAS); this is 2% higher than last year’s assessment.

This is excellent news and follows a visit by a Visit England assessor in early October.

The assessment scores the Museum against a number of set criteria. Compared to last year’s results, improvements were seen in customer care, retail, catering and cleanliness.

Achieving such a good score is down to a great team effort – well done everyone!

As always, the feedback given will be used to continue to improve our offer for all visitors.

  • Voice actors needed!

    Voice actors needed!

Ever wondered what it would be like to hear yourself on the radio?

We’re currently looking for voice actors to feature in various radio ads in the upcoming months, as well as to record snippets of conversation that will appear across various sound points within the Museum over Christmas.

This will be paid work that we’ll try to fit in with your current working schedule. You may also be required to undertake paid travel to Birmingham City Centre to record in a studio, depending on the opportunity.

All are welcome to register their interest, a Black Country accent is of course welcome but by no means necessary.

    How to register your interest

To register your interest as a voice actor, simply drop an email to [email protected] or talk to your line manager.

A  member of the marketing team will then arrange to meet with you to record some sample scripts for your audition piece. This will be at a time that’s suitable, most likely before or after you start your shift.

  • BCLM: Forging Ahead – Woodside Library Call Out

We’ll be launching our public call-out for memories of Woodside Library – one of the largest translocation projects within BCLM: Forging Ahead – on Wednesday 19 September. Do you have any personal stories or a family connection with the Library? Did you borrow there, study there, or dance there? If you do have anything you would like to share to help our interpretation of the library, please pop in and see the Collections team in the Rolfe Street offices.

    A bit about Woodside Library

The library was opened in 1894 to serve the south west part of Dudley. The land for the library and Woodside Park were donated by the Earl of Dudley, who also offered help with the funds to build the library out of the takings from his fetes at Dudley Castle. As such the library, and the adjacent police-houses and fire station, were constructed with a covenant limiting it to public use only. The opening ceremony for this, and Netherton library, built at the same time, was on 24th July 1894. The Earl and Countess of Dudley, along with many local dignitaries, processed from Dudley Central Library, to Netherton, to Woodside. The building featured a Reading Room and Lending Library on the ground floor, and a Recreation Room and Retiring Room upstairs, and was intended for the benefit of the working people of the Woodside area. At the beginning, the library was “closed stack” – visitors had to request books from the librarian – but converted to open access in 1934.

After World War Two, libraries began to modernise and Dudley libraries were at the forefront – they increased their book stocks by 15,000 a year, included paperbacks for the first time and gramophone records, mostly classical music and language learning tools. The upstairs rooms were used for a variety of clubs and societies, and dances hosted by local compere Horace Robinson. The building was refurbished in the early 1970s and operated until 2008.

    Why Woodside Library?

The building is currently in very poor condition and because of the covenant, has proved very difficult to repurpose. We are therefore proud to be able to salvage this beautiful building and give it a new lease of life. Woodside Library also enables us to continue stories of education and children’s lives, social life and the role of local authorities in everyday life in the Black Country. It will complement some of the other buildings by showing civic life in the post-war period, and provide an architecturally impressive sight in the midst of the new development.

  • Museum vans booking

As with the staff pool car we now have a calendar for each of the museums two vans, the small Peugeot and the large Citroen. Both can be used by any member of staff with a current driving licence going off site to collect items on museums business. Bookings will be managed by Ray though the dedicated shared calendars (details on how to do this are listed below).

You will be responsible for the vehicle whilst it is in your position and we will be introducing a ‘use log’ similar to the one in the pool car in the coming weeks which are to be kept in the vehicles. This information will help us to understand how often the vans are being used, for what purpose and by which department.

How to open and use the small or large van calendar

    • Open outlook and click the ‘calendar’ tab.
    • On the ‘home’ tab click ‘open calendar’ and then ‘open shared calendar’ from the list.
    • Type ‘Van – Peugeot (small) or Van – Citroen (large)’ and click ‘OK’ (the small or large van calendar should now open and appear on your list of shared calendars).

    How to book the van

    • Open the small or large van calendar and find the day you wish to book (you will see if it is available).
    • Click the time you want to start and pick ‘new meeting’ from the home tab and click ‘new meeting with all’ from the drop down list.
    • Complete the appointment request with your name as the subject. NOTE: make sure ‘Van – Peugeot (small) or Van – Citroen (large)’ is the only entry in the ‘to’ box (otherwise it will send invites to all of the calendars you have open at the time) and then send.
    • The request will appear as Tentative until Ray approves your request.

    Or

    • Open the calendar and find the day you wish to book (you will see if it is available).
    • select the time on your own calendar, right click and select ‘new appointment’
    • Complete the appointment request with your name as the subject, click ‘invite attendees’ from the appointment tab and enter ‘Van – Peugeot (small) or Van – Citroen (large)’ in the ‘to’ box and then send.
    • The request will appear as Tentative until Ray approves your request.

PLEASE NOTE: both vans are to be returned empty of materials at the agreed return time as someone could have it booked out directly after you.

Please contact David Pitt with any questions.
