  • Staff Tickets – A Day of Black Country History!

    On Saturday 16 July we will be hosting ‘A Day of Black Country History & Heritage’ at the Museum, 10am – 4:30pm.

    We are inviting you all to come along & join for the day, whereby you will discover the rich history of the Black Country through a series of talks and lectures.

    Our very own, Simon Briercliffe, Carol King and Nadia Awal are all attending to speak on their perspective of the Black Country, come and show your support!

  • Festival of Vehicles 2022

    This Father’s Day weekend (18th and 19th June) the Museum will be holding a Festival of Vehicles event, celebrating the region’s rich car-manufacturing history. The weekend will showcase a vast variety of vehicles manufactured in the West Midlands, including world-renowned marques such as Bean, Clyno, Guy, Sunbeam, AJS and Jensen.

    Visitors will be able to take a ride on a vintage motor bus or trolleybus, visit replica motor shops and garages that once existed in the region, as well as discover more about the record-breaking Black Country brands that took land speed records and TT races by storm.

  • Staff Consultative Forum Nomination Open

    The Staff Consultative Forum (SCF) is a group of Museum wide colleagues to act as an important conduit and sounding board for many of the Museum’s key decisions around structure, policies, performance and wider activities that may impact staff. Chaired by the Museum’s Chief Executive/Chief Operating Officer, the Forum meets quarterly. The Forum’s members consist of an elected group of managers, front line colleagues and back office administrative staff to ensure representation of the whole Museum. Excluded from the membership are the Museum’s Leadership and People & Culture teams. The full terms of reference of the Forum can be found under the Documents tab here on the intranet (Documents/Information/Staff Consultative Forum (SCF)/Terms of Reference/Oct 2021).

    To ensure that the Forum remains fresh in its challenge and contribution, elected members can serve on the Forum for a maximum of two years per term and a maximum of two terms. As a result we would now like to invite nominations for the following post:

    • Administrative, Specialist & Managerial     x 1

    If you would like to be considered as a Staff Representative, you will need a colleague from the same Constituency as you to propose your nomination and the name of another staff member, again within the same Constituency, who seconds the nomination.

    To put yourself forward, please complete and return a nomination form SCF Nomination Form to the People & Culture team (based at Canalside) either by hand, deposited in the black post box outside the People & Culture office, or via email to [email protected].

    The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 22 June . Elections will be held following this date if we have multiple candidates for a single role.

    Unsure about which Constituency you fall under? Check the Constituencies paper saved on the Intranet (Museum Documents/Information/Staff Consultative Forum (SCF)/Constituencies) or contact the People & Culture team.

  • Bostin’ Jubilee Bash Success!

    After a week of bank holidays, parades and street parties, we would like to thank all those who helped to make our May half-term “Bostin’ Jubilee Bash” a success. The atmosphere on site was wonderful, and it was so lovely to see both visitors and staff getting into the Jubilee spirit.

    The half-term holiday saw the Museum welcome over 16,000 visitors – smashing the budgeted 12925.

    A huge thank you to all involved.

  • Jubilee Programme and National News Appearance

    This year’s May half term, inspired by the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, is celebrating all things royal with a look back at historic Jubilees and Coronations! Visitors have been invited to don their best red, white and blue outfits to help us in celebrating the legacies of monarchs past and present. There will be a daily street party in the village, a parade and lots of activities for visitors to get involved with. Today the final decorations have gone up – a huge well done to all teams involved for their help with getting the site decorated and ready for a week of right royal fun!

     

    Alongside our busy preparations for the week ahead, today we also welcomed Channel 5, who filmed a piece on the Migration stories we will be telling throughout the Jubilee week for their national news programme.  Mr Praveen Singh, a character based in part on the memories of Mr Piara Singh, who migrated to Wolverhampton from India at 18 years of age in 1951, will be introduced this week as part of our May half term programme. Mr Singh will be a part of the community preparing for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and plays a pivotal role in the Museum beginning to tell stories of migration to the UK in the 1950s and 60s.

    To support the development of this character, BCLM have collaborated alongside actor and creator Vimal Korpal, who has workshopped both the character of Mr Singh and the situations the character will be placed in, with the staff in our team of historic characters who will be portraying the role or playing alongside it. The crew at Channel 5 also spoke to Mr Piara Singh and his son Jim who came in to share their story as part of the wider piece.   • Colleague tickets for Back Home (evening)

    Tickets for our first special event of 2022, our Back Home evening event, went on sale this week to BCLM Members from 12 noon on Wednesday (11 May). Discounted tickets for colleagues will be available for purchase from this Friday (13 May).

    For this year’s 1940s themed evening event Back Home, on Sat 9 Jul 7pm – 10:30pm, visitors can discover how the people of the Black Country came together against difficult odds to support the war effort. Learn about the fearless contributions of ARP wardens, the resourcefulness of those at home, and the vital contribution of the home guard. Headline act the D-Day Darlings will be making a welcome return for this year, as well as the vibrant swing sounds of Kal’s Kats who will be bringing an exciting mix of vintage classics throughout the evening. Plus, snap up some vintage ephemera, from 1940s dresses and suits to homewares at the Museum’s memorabilia markets.

    In line with previous years we’ve been able to ring-fence an allocation of discounted tickets for colleagues this event. An allocation of tickets per event night at a 50% discount will be available for colleagues to purchase for our Back Home Evening event and for other special events that will go on-sale later this year.

    To purchase tickets, please speak to the Sales and Ticketing Team in the Canalside offices.  Colleagues are able to purchase up to four discounted tickets and two additional full price tickets per event.   • ‘A Cracking Easter’ Holiday Programme: Staff Survey 2022

    As you may be aware, our 2022 Cracking Easter programme saw the most successful Easter at the Museum to date, welcoming over 24,000 visitors! As staff members working in direct contact with guests, our frontline staff are key to our understanding of how visitors experience our public programmes and events. They are also key to their success.

    To better gauge the public (and frontline staff) response to this programme, we are asking for your help in providing some feedback. Your valuable insight will inform how we plan programmes going forward and ensure that you have the tools and training to support you to deliver the very best visitor experience.

  • Event Update: “Back Home” – a 1940s Event

    Event Update: “Back Home” – a 1940s Event

    You will be familiar with the Museum’s 1940’s event. We have decided to shift the focus of the event this year to better reflect the domestic Black Country experience. The event, which will be called “Back Home”, will explore civilian life and stories of life in the Black Country and the wider region during the 1940s.

    Visitors will discover stories of how the people of the Black Country came together against difficult odds, and will commemorate the huge efforts of those at home during this pivotal period of history. Stories of the home guard, reserve occupations, make do & mend and dig for victory will be the key focus for the weekend.

    We appreciate that this may be different to what you may have expected. In order to support any questions you may have or may be asked by members of the public or re-enactor groups, someone from the Programming Team will be attending briefings over the course of the next week to answer your queries. A Q&A will be published based on the questions raised in these sessions.

    As we are yet to publicise the event and may not yet have informed re-enactors and traders at the time of publishing this update, please consider this information as confidential until such time as our event details have been made public via our website and social media.
