  • Free Staff Tickets For Festival Of Light!

    Hi all,

    Join us this October to celebrate our Festival of Light as we bring together a celebration of our historic lighting collection and the cultural festival of light, Diwali.

    Date: Saturday 15th October

    Time: 4:00-8.30pm (Please note, tickets for this event are valid for entry from 4pm)

    Make your own special lantern, try your hand at traditional candle dipping and meet the Historical Lighting club who will be at the Museum based in St James School over the weekend.
    The procession will start at 7.30pm, where you too can take part, light up your hand made lantern and join the procession, which will be accompanied by South Asian Dohl drummers and musicians.

    We encourage staff to join the festivities for free!

    Staff are allowed a maximum of 5 tickets each and can only have tickets for themselves and not request on behalf of other staff.

    If you are interested, please visit Sales & Ticketing directly to obtain your tickets.

  • Breakfast at the Visitor Welcome Centre! (For all Staff & Volunteers)

    In celebration of the Visitor Welcome Centre’s grand-opening this Friday, we are keen to ensure that staff have the opportunity to see inside and enjoy an exclusive look at the new building, plus the café!

    We are offering two breakfast previews on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 September, between 8am-10am.

    If you are interested in joining us for a breakfast morning, all you need to do is drop in between 8-10am and help yourself to one complimentary breakfast food item and drink! There is no need to RSVP.

    We are delighted to invite all colleagues (staff & volunteers) to our Bostin’ BCLM Bash.

    We hope to build on the success of last year and have a great fun-filled evening, we really hope you can join us! We took on board the feedback we received following our last event, so there really should be something for everyone! 

    Event Details

    Date: Monday 7th November 2022

    Time: 6pm onwards.

    Theme: This year we are asking for you to go all out at our BCLM costume party, as you dress up as anything that begins with the 1st letter of your name.
    For example – If your name begins with an ‘A’, you could come dressed as anything from an Angel to Austin Powers – There is no wrong costume! Plus, there will be awards for the best dressed! Please note, there is no obligation to wear a costume if you do not feel comfortable.

    Additional Information: There will be several activities taking place throughout the evening, as well as music and food & drink provided.

    Please complete an RSVP here informing us on whether you will/will not be attending and any dietary requirements you may have.

    Alternatively you will find paper RSVP slips at reception. Please place the completed slip in one of the black post box’s located at reception in Rolf street or outside of the People & Culture office in the Canalside offices.

  • National Express bus clinic (Postponed – Date TBC)

    We have partnered with National Express to provide discounted bus travel for all staff!

    We will be hosting a bus clinic on between 9-10am on Thursday 1st September outside the Albion Depot where you are more than welcome to come along and speak to someone from National Express to find out more information.

    National Express have shared their benefits below to encourage more of us to travel on public transport:

    • 5% staff discount off National Express bus travel.
    • 3% discount for train/metro travel.
    • A portal can be downloaded on your mobile phone to ensure an easier, and more efficient experience to book your tickets.
    • Options for weekly, monthly or flexi travel, depending on how many members of staff use the services.
    • This discount is valid 7 days per week, 24 hours a day! (Therefore, your tickets can be used socially, as well as for work purposes).
    • Up to 50% on a wide range of West Midlands attractions (Including; Think Tank, Sea life Centre, Pen Museum, Cadbury World, Drayton Manor and West Midlands Safari Park).

    Elephant and Castle – Staff Previews

    As you may have spotted with the hoardings coming down this week, we are now very close to the opening of our first building from the BCLM: Forging Ahead development, the Elephant & Castle pub!

    We are keen to ensure that staff have the opportunity to see inside the new pub and enjoy a drink and an exclusive look at the new building. We are offering two sessions on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 August, from 5:30 – 7:30pm.

    If you are interested in joining us for one of these events, we kindly ask that staff begin to arrive at the Elephant & Castle from 5:30pm. The doors will open from approx. 6pm and staff will be able to enjoy a complimentary drink, and hear a welcome from Carol King (Director of Programmes) and the team. There will also be an opportunity to speak to the project team about the new building. The bar will remain open for the purchase of drinks until 7:30pm when the Museum will close.

    Don’t worry if you’re not able to join us for one of these dates as more opportunities will be taking place in the future.

  • Halloween Nights – Colleague (Staff & Volunteers) Tickets Now Available

    Colleagues (Staff & Volunteers) can now purchase tickets for this year’s Halloween Nights events! Colleagues (Staff & Volunteers) may purchase up to four tickets at a discounted rate of 50%, as well as 2 additional tickets at standard price.

    Tickets can be purchased from the Sales and Ticketing office in Canalside via card payment only.

  • Forging Ahead Tours – Behind the hoardings

    Forging Ahead Tours – Behind the hoardings

    Buildings are going up, and the launch of Forging Ahead is getting ever closer – with so much now happening, staff are invited to take part in events to have a closer look at the construction and learn more about what is going on behind those hoardings.

    Briefing sessions will start in the WI and then take staff for a look in the Historic Development and Industrial Area compounds, followed by a walk up to see the new Visitor Centre from the terrace area outside Rolfe Street. PPE (hard hats, boots, etc.) is not required.

    Sessions will last about an hour with a maximum of 10 colleagues at each session. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Attendance is voluntary and in your own time, with sessions taking place on;

    • Wednesday 27th July at 3.30p.m.
    • Thursday 28th July at 3.30 p.m.

  • IgnitEd Workshops – New Staff Discount Available

    As you may be aware, our Programming team run various IgnitEd courses, allowing visitors to try their hand at a new skill, find a new hobby, or have a go at something different. We would love to see more staff take advantage of these courses, so will be offering a discount on IgnitEd tickets for the remainder of 2022.

    There are various courses available for staff to attend:

     

    Full Day Courses (10am till 4pm) – £ 30 per person (£50 to the general public)

    Join a local artist for an intensive day exploring a heritage art and craft. These courses are open to adults aged 16+.

    Sat 20th August – Introduction to Pottery

    Sat 10th Sept – Glass Painting

    Sat 1st Oct – Introduction to Leatherwork

    Sat 15th Oct – Natural Dyes

    Family Courses (10am till 12:00 and 1:30 till 3:30pm) – £ 3.50 per person (£5 to general public)

    Come with your family to have a taster into some heritage arts and crafts. These courses are designed to be family friendly. All courses are open to everyone aged 10+.

    • Please note that there is a limited number of tickets available for each course, therefore tickets will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

  • Back Home – This Weekend!

    Back Home – This Weekend!

    Back Home, our 1940s event, is coming up this weekend (Sat 9 & Sun 10 July)!

    Visitors will experience the sights and sounds of 1940s Britain as we head back in time to the 1940s this weekend. Our Canalside village will be transformed with a host of historic costumed characters, vintage vehicles, and decoration as we explore this pivotal period of British history.

    Our visitors will discover how the people of the Black Country came together against difficult odds to support the war effort. They’ll learn about the fearless contributions of ARP wardens, the resourcefulness of those at home, and the vital contribution of the home guard. Plus, there will be lots of vintage ephemera, from 1940s dresses and suits to homewares, available at the memorabilia markets.

    Entertainment will include The D-Day Darlings, the Kalamazoo Dance Band, and visitors will have a chance to meet key characters too including Winston Churchill and George Formby. Plus, over 200 external historic re-enactors will be joining us for the whole weekend!

    Plus, also  happening this weekend are our Access Tours, Wartime Kitchens and Gardens.  With our audio descriptive tour at 10:30 and our BSL tour at 2:00, visitors on the tour will discover the history of “growing your own” during wartime. Gardens were dug up for allotment space, housewives had to deal with rationing, and families were introduced to the culinary delights of Woolton pie, Spam and even nettle soup. On this tour, visitors will enjoy tales from those who remember wartime cookery and “Digging for Victory”.

    As a reminder, staff are now able to purchase unlimited evening tickets at 50% off – please pop in to the Sales & Ticketing office at Canalside to purchase.

    We are happy to share that staff tickets for the Museum’s Back Home evening event on Saturday 9 July can now be purchased from the Sales and Ticketing office at a discounted rate of 50%.
