    Event Information: 

    An event for all the family, where visitors can work together to help Santa start Christmas Time in the Black Country by finding magic clocks around the museum.

    We all know that Santa uses special time magic to travel all around the world in one night. That magic is called “Christmas Time”. Santa uses special magical clocks, all around the world, that tick with Christmas Time. Today, we need to get Christmas Time started in the Black Country! So, Santa needs your help to find and START the four magical clocks that represent each borough of the Black Country.

    Along the way, you will meet Christmassy Characters who are all preparing for Christmas – help them to start the clocks and they’ll help you find the main man himself!

    Remembrance Day & Armistice Day 

    Date: Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November

    Internal Information: 

    • Saturday 11th November

      On Saturday there will be a simple marking of the minutes silence at 11 am. Historic characters will ring a bell in the new High Street and The Village to inform visitors that we are pausing to pay respects at 11 am. Characters in buildings are invited to stand on their door step and join the visitors in the silence.

    • Sunday 12th November

      On Sunday we shall mark the Remembrance with readings in front of the chapel in the village; this will being at 10.50 am with poems, there will be a recording of the last post and reveille either side of the silence, culminating in the final poem about the war horses. Our historic characters will lay a red poppy wreath; Danny will be present and Michelle will have a purple wreath in memory of the animals of war. Again historic characters and visitors are asked to join us for the occasion.

    Festival of Light

    Date: Saturday 11 November.

    Event copy: 

    Black Country Living Museum offers an immersive light sound and dance experiences across the entire site, incorporating light projections, bubble shows and face painting during the evening. Why not join in the fun and take part in one of the beginners’ Bhangra dance classes or experience our UV Disco in the Workers’ Institute?

    This year, we’re encouraging visitors to channel the “make do and mend” spirit and craft their lanterns at home to bring with them.

    Internal information:

    • We won’t be hosting lantern crafting workshops at the event this year.
    • Lantern procession is 6.30-7.30pm.

    Dates: Saturday 28 October, Sunday 29 October, Monday 30 October and Tuesday 31 October.

    Event information: 

    Bring the whole family along to enjoy a night of trick or treats around our historic shops and houses and experience thrilling street entertainment.

    There’s plenty to get stuck into: brave the creepy crawlies and animals, meet our spooky characters – including circus performers, fire-jugglers and magicians – and put on your ghoulish dancing shoes. Don’t forget to join in our costume parade; there are prizes to be won for both adults and children for the best-dressed monstrous visitor.

    October Half Term – Myths & Superstitions

    Dates: Saturday 28 October – Sunday 5 November

    Event copy: 

    From black cats to magpies, to spilling the salt or walking under a ladder – there are superstitions a’plenty in the Black Country, but where did these strange suspicions come from?

    Explore stories of myths and folktales with the Museum’s quirky characters as you uncover tales, tricks and strange goings-on.

    Follow the family trail and find out what’s ailing the good folk of the village, the shopkeepers and workers – but will the quack doctor’s cure-all remedy really help them to lift their spirits?

    Internal information: 

    The programme this year is framed around a travelling salesman – Gideon Gladwell – who has come to the Black Country to sell his “Infallible Ointment”.

    The trail is a guide to how the ointment can treat the various ailments of the townsfolk, often caused by worries linking to superstitions. But – not everyone is glad to have Gideon around, especially Mr Doo the chemist! Meanwhile, the townsfolk are grappling with their own superstitions – what to do if you see a lone magpie?

    What will the bride in the High Street wear for her “something blue”? What are the Edwardian customs for a funeral?

    Speak to Historic Characters about the myths and superstitions they hold and where they came from – and don’t forget to recommend Gideon Gladwell’s “Infallible Ointment!”!

    All Colleague Briefings – October 2023

    As part of our continual programme of ensuring engagement and communication across the Museum’s operational and strategic activity, we will be holding briefings to update all colleagues on the Museum’s progress and the plans for the remainder of 2023, a critical year following the opening of the row of six buildings in our new street.

    These briefings will take place on:

    • Wednesday 18th October 2023
    • Thursday 19th October 2023
    • Saturday 21st October 2023

    All the briefings will be held in the Museum’s Workers’ Institute, and will commence at 9.00, finishing at 9.30.

    • Many of you will already be scheduled by your line managers to attend one of these sessions. If you have not yet been scheduled, please contact your line manager.
    • All contracted colleagues are mandated to attend these sessions. We would also strongly urge colleagues from both our volunteer and casual community to all attend.
    • You only need to attend one of the briefing sessions.
    • Refreshments will be provided in the WI.

    After reviewing the feedback from the Health & Wellbeing survey, we are excited to announce two new activities for you to get involved in!

    Get ready to get active, social, and get your game on!

    1. Quiz Night!
    Let’s make this an evening to remember!

    Are you ready for a night of fun, laughter, and friendly competition? The Health & Wellbeing Group is thrilled to invite you to our exciting Quiz Night event at the Elephant & Castle Pub on Thursday 12th October 2023, arrival at 5:30 PM, for a 6pm start.

    Prize: The winning team will each receive a family ticket to Hoo Zoo, Dinosaur World – a fantastic opportunity for a fun day trip.

    Refreshments: The bar will be open for you to purchase your favourite drinks and snacks throughout the event as well as a few free nibbles.

    Relax, enjoy a beverage, and unwind with your fellow participants.

    How to Participate: Please assemble a team of four members and give yourselves a creative team name!

    (Please note, the quiz is free to enter but is capped at 13 teams due to space).

    2. Embrace Autumn – Wreath Making!

    As the vibrant colours of autumn begin, it’s the perfect time to get creative and embrace the season’s beauty.

    Come and celebrate the season by crafting your very own beautiful wreath. Immerse yourself in the artistic process while enjoying the company of colleagues and friends, join the Health & Wellbeing Group at 4.30pm – 6.30pm on Tuesday 17th October in The Brickworks, where we’ll craft small autumnal wreaths together.

    Cost: The workshop is priced at £7 per person, which covers all the necessary materials.

    Foraging Adventure: For those who sign up early, we’re offering a unique opportunity to forage for some of the materials in the picturesque surroundings of Mary Stevens Park at 10.30am on Saturday 14th October 2023. It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature and gather special elements for your wreath. If you choose to join us for the foraging activity, please bring comfortable outdoor attire and a sense of adventure. This activity is optional, and all materials for wreath making will still be provided.
