The Museum will close 25-26 December for the Christmas holidays, but we will be back between Wednesday 27 December – Sunday 7 January before closing for our winter maintenance.

People News December 2023
Welcomes
This month we welcomed the following colleagues;
• Adam Finney, Enterprise Team Manager (Operational Delivery). Adam will be working alongside the Enterprise Management team to oversee the daily front of house operations.
• Hollie Newey, Bookings Administrator. Hollie joins the Ticketing team to support Programme Development with the administrative delivery of the Museum’s Key Stage 1 ‘Little Makers project’.
• Grace Rea and Jane Hodgkiss, as Site Cleaners in the Cleaning & Recycling team.

Farewells
We have this month bid farewell to Jordan Ball, Finance Assistant, who has left the Museum after 8 years to further her career in accounting and Jacqueline Lee, Enterprise Supervisor, who has decided after 3 years at the Museum to explore a career outside of Food & Drink/Hospitality.
We wish Jordan and Jacqui all the best in their future endeavours. -

Unwrapping Christmas
Date(s): 25th November – 7th January (daytime)
Event Copy: The whole of the Black Country are getting ready for Christmas! As the festive season is finally upon us, meet characters preparing for the “big day” through the ages. We have stories ranging from the Edwardian era to the Swinging 60s and don’t miss our festive decorations from decades past!
Unwrapping Plus (Internal name only)
Date(s): Every weekend & school holiday Daytime
Copy: Meet more characters, join in with the Carols at Providence Chapel and have a go at making your own mini-wreath in Hut 14. Sing your heart out with our festive roaming musician in the village! There’s even a trail to guide you through the ages! Don’t forget to grab a bag of chestnuts and settle down for a battered pig in blanket from our very own Hobbs.
Internal Information:
- The only difference between Unwrapping and Unwrapping plus is that there is a wider food offer, more characters on site, carol activity, a roaming musician and crafts
- All props for Historic Characters remain the same throughout both programmes – please keep them on display, they do not need to be put away
- Admissions team are to only hand out the trail on Unwrapping Plus days – there is no need to hand out an additional map as this is contained within the trail. Trails are not to be given out on Unwrapping Day times, just Unwrapping Plus.

Safe Together at BCLM: Slips, Trips and Falls
For this month’s safety notice, we are focusing on slips, trips, and falls and what to do in the case of an emergency.
To reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls, please read the following:
- Cleaning up or reporting spillages
- Keeping walkways clear
- Avoiding trailing wires
- Reporting worn flooring
- Wearing suitable footwear for the conditions underfoot

Staff Consultative Forum: Vacancies – closes Sunday
There are a couple of vacancies on the Staff Consultative Forum, in addition to a number of elected Staff Consultative Forum representatives whose term is coming to an end in December. We would therefore like to invite nominations for the following constituent posts:
- Administrative, Specialist & Managerial x 1
- Enterprise (including F&D, Retail & Admissions) x 2
- Historic Characters x 2
The Forum plays a key communication and discussion role in many significant matters affecting all colleagues across the Museum.
If you would like to be considered as a Staff Consultative Forum Representative, you will need a colleague from the same constituency as you to propose your nomination and the name of another colleague, again within the same constituency, who seconds the nomination.
The closing date for nominations is this Sunday, 3 December 2023. Elections will be held following this date if we have multiple candidates for a single role.
To put yourself forward, please complete and return a nomination form to the People & Culture team (based at Canalside) either by hand, by depositing in the black post box outside of the People & Culture office, or via email to [email protected].
All employees are eligible to apply, with the exception of the Leadership Team. Casual Workers may only apply to represent, propose or second a nomination for the Casual Worker constituency.

Upcoming Road Closure – 1-4 December
The Midland Metro Alliance will fully close Birmingham New Road on both sides of Hanson’s bridge from Friday 1 – Monday 4 December, to remove the existing bridge deck. This will divert vehicles and pedestrians. Please be aware of the closure and posted detour (photo attached below) if you travel this area regularly – it may add time to your commute.

Photography Day: Call Out!
On Tuesday 19 December, Audiences & Communications will be hosting a photography morning across various locations on site. A professional photographer will be on-site taking staged photos of ‘visitors’ exploring the building and interacting with our historic characters.
We are looking for a small group of volunteers (colleagues, as well as friends, family and young children) to act as visitors in the photos.
This would involve attending the Museum on Tuesday 19 December from around 10am-1pm and appearing in staged photos.
In order to accurately reflect the Museum’s audience, we are keen to ensure a variety of different people are represented in the photos. We would like to include people of all ages and ethnicities, as well as people from the LGBTQ+ community.
If you or anyone you know (family members, friends and young children are more than welcome) would like to take part, please register your interest by emailing [email protected] by Friday 15 December at 4pm.

Museum Update: Stour
You may have noticed that Stour, one of our historic narrow boats, has been removed from our canal.
She has been lifted safely from the water so that we can better understand what her conservation requirements are.
She will be returned to the Museum shortly.
