    Applications for the Visitor Services Knowledge Circle 2018 close at 5 pm on Wednesday 28th November. Have you applied?

    This fantastic opportunity which is fully funded to include travel and accommodation, gives two BCLM colleagues, in a visitor facing role, the chance to spend 5 days with one of our partner Museums which include The British Museum, National Trust and Leeds Museums to name a few.  The aim of the programme is to enable colleagues to gain knowledge and insight which they can bring back and apply to their role.

  • Change in payslip system

    We have been advised by our external payroll provider, CK Chartered Accountants that they are gradually transferring their clients to a new e-payslip portal.

    The new portal is designed to enhance security, ensure compliance with GDPR and be more user-friendly. Other CK clients have been using the portal for several months and the Museum is now required to start using the new portal.

    This will affect all staff – those of you who currently receive e-payslips and those who have paper payslips. With the new portal there is no longer the facility for CK to provide paper payslips. (There is an option in the portal to allow staff to print their own individual payslips for those that want to keep a paper copy).

    All staff members will need to provide an email address to receive an email invitation to access the portal. (For individuals who already receive an e-payslip through the existing system, that email address will be used for the new portal).

    You will also get a user guide to assist you in the registration process and you will be able to set your own memorable username and password.

    Access to your payroll data will be through the internet, via desktop, tablet and smartphone devices with the ability to download and save as required.

    More information will be provided to staff through their team managers over the next couple of weeks.

    Thanks to those who attended one of the all-team briefing sessions; there were some good questions posed at the end.

    The majority of questions related to BCLM: Forging Ahead and so answers to those have now been posted in the Documents section of the intranet (About Us – Strategy & Governance – Forging Ahead – Project Overview – FAQs).

    There was also a question about car park security relating to some recent incidents involving damage to & theft from cars in the car park. I’d like to assure you that these incidents have been reported to the police, that CCTV is in place and that the barriers will be improved to ensure no vehicles can get around them. But, please do remember not to leave valuables on view, ensure your vehicles are locked & use anti-theft devices if you have them.

    Christmas Greenery Appeal 2018

    It’s that time of year again when we start thinking about decorating the buildings ready for the festive season.  We use traditional greenery for many of the houses and shops, so we are appealing for your help.

    Do you have rampant ivy or holly that needs pruning?  Do you have excess Christmas/ fir tree cuttings?  Or do you have other evergreen materials you can spare?

    If you have any of the above we would be grateful for donations of greenery.  The Santa Hunts and ‘Christmas in the Home’ start on Saturday 24 November this year, so we will start preparing key buildings from Monday 19 November and continue the following week.  We may also need additional greenery in December, to refresh the buildings.

    If you can bring in any materials you can deposit them outside the staff Guide Hut and the Collections team will collect them.

    During the festive period, once buildings are decorated, if you are looking for greenery to refresh your building we will store surplus greenery on the first floor of the Cast iron House.

  • Doo’s staff & volunteer rooms refurbishment

    The staff and volunteer rooms above Emile Doo’s Chemist Shop are being refurbished from Monday 5 to Friday 30 November. This will improve the facilities for all colleagues and will include a second kitchenette, new toilets, improved heating and new furniture.

    Staff and volunteers will need to remove all personal items from the rooms by the end of the day on Sunday 4 November. Lunch and break spaces will be a little tight during the refurbishments, so please be considerate of others and, where possible, take items home rather than leaving them at the Museum.

    Spaces have been allocated according to the building you are based in each day, please do use the rooms allocated to you otherwise we will not have sufficient space for everyone:

    A double page spread showcased 40 years of Museum life, peppered with interviews from Museum staff and volunteers.

  • Free flu vaccination

    This winter, the Museum is offering all staff the chance to get a free flu vaccination from Boots.  Please contact HR between 31 Oct and 31 Dec 2018 to receive your vaccination voucher.

    Please note certain groups are eligible or a free flu jab from your GP or local participating outlet.

    Therefore, we would also advise you to check the NHS website to find out whether you automatically qualify for a free jab via your GP/local provider: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/who-should-have-flu-vaccine/

  • Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme 2018 – Results

    The Museum has achieved a score of 87% in its most recent Visit England quality assessment (VAQAS); this is 2% higher than last year’s assessment.

    This is excellent news and follows a visit by a Visit England assessor in early October.

    The assessment scores the Museum against a number of set criteria. Compared to last year’s results, improvements were seen in customer care, retail, catering and cleanliness.

    Achieving such a good score is down to a great team effort – well done everyone!

    As always, the feedback given will be used to continue to improve our offer for all visitors.

     

  • Disposal of ash from fires in bins

    Disposal of ash from fires in bins

    Please use the ash bins provided for the disposal of ash, not the paths around the Museum.

    If the ash bin you would normally use is full, please ask the Duty Manager to get it emptied for you.

    In some areas ash is beginning to overflow onto the flower beds which is creating extra work in maintaining the grounds. Any path repairs that are needed will be carried out by the maintenance team when required.

    Your assistance with this is much appreciated.
