  • Nominate your Historic Black Country Hero

    Nominate your Historic Black Country Hero

    Our summer holiday activities this year will celebrate the lives of historic Black Country heroes.

    We’re asking you to nominate your Black Country heroes so that we can identify six historic figures whose stories best represent the history of the Black Country and its contribution to the world. Our summer programme (20 Jul – 1 Sep) will feature these heroes.

    To qualify as a Black Country hero, your nomination must either be a person from the area known for a notable historic achievement, or someone not originally from the region who made a profound contribution to the life of the Black Country and its people. 

    Complete the simple form below and tell us about your notable entrepreneurs, sports stars, educators, politicians, pioneers…

    Nominations close at 5pm on Wed 1 May and the final list of heroes will be chosen by School Holiday Planning team.

  • Collections store tours

    Thank you all for your interest in taking a tour of the stores – please note that both dates for the tours in March are now fully booked.

  • Next Volunteer Coffee Morning – Change of Date

    The next volunteer coffee morning has been rescheduled for Friday 5t April. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope you can still come along.

    Time and location remain the same: Rooms 2/3 at 10:30am.

  • Research opportunity to visit Imperial War Museum

    We have 10 places available on a voluntary research visit to the Imperial War Museum on Tuesday 19 March 2019.

    Why are we going?

    The Imperial War Museum (https://www.iwm.org.uk/) explores conflict and its impact on people’s lives, recording conflict and difficult histories. We are visiting to take inspiration from IWM, to share ideas and to see how other museums tackle difficult histories within a learning environment. We will be looking at trails, activities and interpretation methods used to inform visitors. Everyone attending will be asked to complete an activity work book, which will be collected at the end of the visit. This is a great opportunity to see the work of a highly regarded national museum, and to get to know other members of staff, volunteers and supporters.

    Exhibitions:

    Making a New World: explores how the First World War shaped society, using immersive live music, performance and public debates.

    The Holocaust Exhibition: The Holocaust Exhibition tells the story of the Nazi persecution of the Jews and other groups before and during the Second World War.

    MIMESIS: African Soldier: Millions of African and Colonial soldiers contributing to Victories throughout the First World War.

    Moments of Silence: Moments of Silence, exploring the origins, history and future of remembrance rituals.

    Life after the First World War in Photography: Through a rich collection of photographs, discover the innovation and resourcefulness that shaped regeneration of the World Post-War.

     

    Who is it available to?

    Any member of staff or volunteer.

    Please note, the cost of the trip is being funded by the Museum. You will not be paid to visit the Imperial War Museum unless you are a contracted staff member and have permission from your line manager to attend as part of your role.

    How to reserve your place?

    If you would like to attend, simply email [email protected] leaving your name, team and contact telephone number.  Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

    Pick up and drop off

    Leaving BCLM at 8am and leaving London at 5pm

    Approx. return time at the Museum 8.00-8.30pm

  • Car Park and Road Maintenance

    Pot hole repairs will commence on the morning of Mon 14 Jan. This will affect all roads within the museum to some extent.

    Work will begin on the roads on site, and then move to the main car park. This will include pot hole repairs and some remodelling to gain eight additional parking spaces and the installation of four more lighting columns to provide permanent lighting to the whole car park.

    We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause while we carry out this essential maintenance and improvement work.

  • Shutdown Training Programme Live

    2019’s shutdown training timetable will run from Monday 7th January to Friday 18th January, followed by the Staff Social on Monday 21st January.

    The training programme contains mandatory training which all colleagues will need to attend on either the 9th January or 11th January for a full day as well as some mandatory training sessions for specific colleagues in First Aid, Cash Handling and Tessitura on other days.

    There are also shorter sessions on various topics which you can sign up to attend if interested and these range from Personal Financial Planning to Personal Well-being.

    Last but not least we have sessions planned specifically for managers focusing on sickness absence management and contracts.

    If you are interested in attending any of the optional sessions shown then please contact your manager to sign up. Your manager will let you know which mandatory sessions you will need to attend.

  • Staff Social – A Date For Your Diary

    To say a big thank you to all colleagues for their hard work in 2018 a celebration of success will take place on Monday 21st January.

    Keep an eye on the Intranet in December for further updates and how to RSVP.

  • December Pay Date

    This year’s December pay date will be Friday 21st December.

    This will apply to both salaried and hourly paid colleagues.

    Hourly paid colleagues will be paid for the four weeks ending 23rd December while Casual staff will also receive their holiday pay for the 13 weeks to the 9th December.

  • Grant Bird appointed as Acting Director of Visitor Engagement

    Grant will take up the interim position on Monday 10 December for a period of 6 months.

    Most recently covering the combined Marketing Manager maternity cover & Audience Analyst role and before that, being part of the Collections Team as a volunteer and curator respectively, Grant has worked for the Museum for 2 and a half years.

    Before that he spent seventeen years working in branding and communications and brings a wealth of management experience to the role, providing additional interim support to this area of the Museum’s operation.

    Interim marketing team arrangements will be communicated in due course.

  • Museum Wins “Day Out With The Kids” Award

    Day Out With The Kids is a website dedicated to recommending exciting ideas for days out ideas to families across the nation. This year, the site created their first ever Family Favourite awards, to “recognise the attractions going the extra mile to deliver a great family day out”.  Nominations were put to a public vote, and we’re pleased to announce that we have been awarded “Best Educational Day Out” for 2018 in the Midlands.

    We are thrilled to have won the award and are so thankful to all that voted for us. We are especially proud considering the competition in our category which included such other high profile attractions as Warwick Castle, ThinkTank Birmingham and Tudor World.
