Following the recent all-colleague briefings where the Museum’s draft strategy for 2024 – 28 was trailed, we hope you find this summary helpful in understanding our future direction and work.

We’ve been working to develop this strategy since January and we are delighted that more than 1,500 people gave us their views, including colleagues, visitors and members, volunteers, Community Panel members and stakeholders like Arts Council England and West Midlands Growth Company. There was consensus that our vision and mission should have an external focus, and be about people and place which chimed with our desire to be ‘more than a museum’.

We’re pleased to be able to share the headlines with you now but this will be a vital document for us to share with external audiences too in the new year, such as those who invest in us and work with us.

New to this Strategy is a set of Guiding Principles that brings together the values prioritised by colleagues, volunteers and Trustees during the strategy consultation. We hope they will resonate with all of you, whatever your role or area of work, and that going forward they will be considered in all that we do.

Next steps:

• Leadership team and senior colleagues will shortly begin to work on more detailed delivery plans
• During autumn, teams will use this as a basis on which to plan for 2024
• Launched publically in early 2024.

Dear Colleagues,

I was pleased to see the message to you all from Paul Belford, our Chair of the Museum Board, after we opened the Row of Six.  I hope it helped to show how much the Board is aware of the enormity of the project and the contribution everyone has made.  However, the contribution of every member of staff really kicks-in now, with much of the new development open, some of our new buildings trading, and new storylines being told.  It’s as though you all, the collective “client” now takes the reins.

At the same time as this message of thanks, I have today recognised over 30 staff – with personal thanks from me – who have been at the centre of the creative process which has led us to this point.

We will have all learnt new things and skills during this project, and that is a terrific legacy and resource for the Museum.

As some of you may already be aware, we are experiencing an increasingly large amount of spam emails from people identifying as members of our Leadership team.

After investigating further with our IT department, we’re asking everyone with a bclm email address to be vigilant of the following:

• Encourage everyone to check with IT if they’re unsure about the validity of an email
• Look at the ‘from’ email (does it end in @bclm.com?)
• Please never open attachments or reply straight away if you are unsure and always check with IT first

Halesowen College has highlighted the achievement of its cornerstone Employers with a special awards ceremony, where the Black Country Living Museum was presented with the ‘Supported Internship Employer of the Year’ Award.

Representatives of the Museum, Ricki Boden, Volunteer Coordinator and Susannah Green, People & Culture Advisor, accepted the award on Thursday 13 July at a ceremony attended by James Morris, MP for Halesowen – for the work we have been doing in partnership with Halesowen College. We look forward to our next cohort of learners in September.

Claire Hawkes, Supported Employment Coordinator said:

“The Supported Internship of the year award was presented to BCLM for their constant and conscious effort to implement required reasonable adjustments to enable our supported interns to feel confident, engaged and productive within the setting. Each intern’s mentor received training and has worked meticulously with the Job Coach and young people to generate valuable resources tailored to the way each intern learns best. This has created an environment where diversity is celebrated, we are proud to continue to work with them as one of our cornerstone employers.”
