  • Shop and Give for Free

    Raise extra funds for BCLM for free when shopping online on Amazon.

    We have recently enrolled in Amazon’s AmazonSmile programme, where they donate 0.5% of the net purchase price of your eligible purchases to your chosen charity.   • Collections Update – Research

    Research:  we are trialling a new process for research. As such, from Monday 22 July 2019 the following will be in place:

    • Appointments to carry out research will be limited to two periods every week. These will be Wednesday mornings between 9am and 1pm, and Thursday afternoons, from 1.30 to 5pm.
    • A notice period for research requests for both staff and external researchers will come into effect.  Therefore, should you wish to access an item from the archive and/or library to carry out research, we kindly ask that you give at least one week’s notice from the date you hope to access the information (in line with the above allotted times). This will allow the necessary time to prepare the requested information. 

    All requests to carry out research should be made to the Museum’s Archivist & Librarian Karen directly at [email protected]

  • Spinsonic SEND Sensory Circus

    Spinsonic SEND Sensory Circus will be visiting BCLM on Tuesday 13 August. Up to 50 children with additional needs from the Dudley area, aged 16 and under, along with siblings and parents/carers will join in the inclusive and relaxed circus skills play session from 10am-12pm in Hall 2.

    Activities include ground based circus skills comprising: juggling balls, rings and scarves, hula hoops, plate spinning, pedal goes, starter stilts, diabolo, poi spinning, balance beam, free standing slackline, flower sticks, walk the rolling drum. There will also be a chill out corner with circus play tents, tunnels, books, cushions.

  • Knobs and Knockers -Specialist Tour

    We are looking forward to meeting the Nottingham Macular Society when they visit BCLM on Tuesday 23 July.

    The Community Engagement team, and collections, have developed a new touch tour for blind and partially sighted visitors.

    Knobs and Knockers is one of the latest themes, and we will be expanding the offer as more visitors request specialist tours.

    This handling session forms part of our future plans to transform the visitor journey and increase attendance.

  • Next Stop – Simmer Down Festival!

    On Sunday 21 July, we are joining Birmingham’s annual Arts and Reggae Festival as part of BCLM’s Community Roadshow.

    Rooted in north Birmingham, Simmer Down Festival is a free family festival located in the beautiful surroundings of Handsworth Park. The festival celebrates Birmingham’s rich cultural diversity by paying tribute to reggae and other musical genres that have contributed to Birmingham as an international City of culture.

    Our team will join the Black Country Players and Historical Characters in sharing skills and collecting real stories from real people across the Black Country. Our particular focus this week is linked to JH Lavender’s Aluminium Foundry and Black Country industries.

  • Comedy Memories Wanted

    Do you have memories or stories about Black Country comedy from 1950 to 2000?

    Finding Our Funny Roots is exploring how humour in the Black Country is rooted in the heritage of comedians from the past. Uncovering stories of some of the Black Country’s forgotten stars it will offer the opportunity to put these performers back into the spotlight and start a conversation about how we have laughed in the past.

    The project will focus on identifying research and recording the heritage of humour in the Black Country from 1950 – 2000.

  • Community Roadshow Update

    We’re rolling up our sleeves this weekend as we embark on a non-stop Community Roadshow journey. Join us at the following events starting on Friday 28 June at Celebrate Sandwell located in the West Bromwich Town Hall,  Upper Gornal Fun day in the Recreation Ground on Saturday 29 June and finishing off at Himley Hall for our annual Armed Forces Day on Sunday.

    BCLM will continue to call for memories of the Historic Gas Showroom which was located in West Bromwich High Street between 1940s-60s at Celebrate Sandwell and will collect memories for Stanton’s record and Music shop at Upper Gornal Fun Day.

    We will be commemorating the lives of men and women in the Armed Forces on Sunday 30 June 11am-5pm.  Armed Forces Day at Himley Hall is a FREE family event including vintage fairground rides, Punch and Judy shows and craft, food and vintage stalls.  An array of Historical Characters will be attending this event courtesy of Black Country Players. There will also be paintballing, provided by Dudley Army Cadet Force and an archery range, provided by Kingswinford Air Cadet Squadron.

  • Ken Dworak

    It is with sadness that we must pass on the news that Ken Dworak, a long-serving volunteer at the Museum, died recently, after a short illness with cancer.

    Ken volunteered at the Museum for over ten years, operating the Print Shed at the back of the Cast Iron Houses.  He printed numerous materials, including countless carrier bags for the shops, cinema posters, and more recently, posters for the 1940s weekends.  His knowledge and enthusiasm for the print shed were much appreciated across the Museum.  Ken also volunteered on Wednesdays with the Collections team, helping us catalogue objects, audit stores, conservation cleaning and helping us decorate the site at Christmas.  He was a valued member of the Wednesday Collections volunteer team team and a lovely, friendly person to work with.  He will be very much missed.

    Ken’s funeral will be held at Gornal Wood Crematorium on Wednesday 3 July at 9.40am.

    And a big thank you to everyone who came along yesterday and joined in the fun and questionable games!
