    Safe together at BCLM: Working at Height

    Working at Height remains one of the biggest causes of fatalities and major injuries in the UK. Work at height means work in any place where, if there were no precautions in place, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury.

     Before working at height follow these simple steps:

    • Avoid work at height where it’s reasonably practicable to do so
    • Prevent falls by using the right type of equipment safely or by using an existing place of work that is already safe. Don’t overreach or use equipment that isn’t stable.
    • Minimise the distance and consequences of fall by using the right type of equipment that you have checked is safe to use

     If others are working at height then keep yourself safe and don’t enter any exclusion area that has been set up e.g. cones around areas where the Genie lift is operating. This is to prevent you being struck by anything that may be dropped from above.

    Risk assessments must be in place before any work at height takes place so make sure you have read and signed any risk assessments for the task before you do it.

    Red By Night Staff Survey

    Thank you to everyone who participated in Red By Night! With the opening of our new Industrial Quarter – what a night it was! We’ve had some great feedback from visitors:

    • 90% rated the experience as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’.
    • 85% said they learned something new about Black Country heritage.
    • 72% said they learned something new about the environmental impact of industry
    • 89% said they felt it was an immersive experience.

    Here are some comments from visitors (both positive and constructive):

    • “Your staff members help transform us back to the times where these things were necessary to survive. I really appreciate how they each embody their roles and take it seriously. I learnt a lot about anchor making and chain link making thank you so much”
    • “The enthusiasm of everyone. The street theatre/entertainers. Seeing everywhere lit up.”
    • “Seeing all the live demonstrations – nail making, the forge by the docks, the casting, and the brick making!”
    •  “The variety of events on and different things to see – it was great to see it at night as well!”
    •  “Have the red by night event slightly later in the year, to give you a bit more daylight to see things. Alternatively,  a bit more street lighting perhaps.”
    •  “We would have liked more interaction from demonstrators.”
    •  “The food we wanted to buy had run out at 8.30pm when we stopped by. A restock would have been great.”

    A designated Admissions email address, [email protected], is now operational for official communication. This email is addressed to key staff, including Lisa Edwards, Emily White, Carla Jasper, and Elizabeth Peters, and is for internal use only.

    For matters requiring the attention of specific Admissions managers, communication can be directed to the Admissions inbox directly. Inquiries addressing individual team members can still be facilitated by contacting them individually via email.

    Please be advised that due to the Easter bank holiday, March pay date will be on Thursday 28 March 2024.

    To support you in planning your finances, please note that there will be a 5 week gap between February and March pay dates.

    As a reminder, the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) can provide advice and tools on managing finances.

    You can access the EAP service by calling 0800 756 0861 and quoting ‘Black Country Living Museum’ and ‘Perkbox’ or you can access the EAP portal via the Perkbox app/webpage.

    Exciting news!

    We are teaming up with The National Express to offer all colleagues a Try-before-you-buy ticket to encourage new passengers onto the region’s buses.

    The incentive scheme offers colleagues the opportunity to sign up for 4 weeks of free travel. 

    It is hoped that this scheme will encourage more people to make the long-term switch to bus travel and help keep more bus services on the road, fewer private cars, and reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the West Midlands, helping to achieve the #wm2041 goal of a net zero carbon region in two decades.

    Are you a classic car enthusiast? Do you own a vintage vehicle? Then we need you!

    We are reaching out to our wider community to ask if you would be interested in showing your vehicle and contributing to our programmes – whether that be a car, bus, motorcycle or even a lorry!

    Thank you to everyone who participated in our February Half Term programme – Opple a Day! We’ve had some great feedback from visitors:

    • 91% rated the experience as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’.
    • 90% said they learned something new about Black Country heritage.
    • 85% said they learned something new about 1950s and 60s History.

    • “The night soil man! The characters were very friendly and informative.”
    • “The school house was great with lots of information to keep the children interested and very entertaining.”
    • “The changing and constant evolution of the museum. The knowledge and friendliness of museum staff, in fact, the general atmosphere created by actually stepping back in time.”
    • “We enjoyed the board games in the hut.”
    • “I think that the people in the buildings dressed in the time period, should be in character throughout. It’s fine having moments of out of character, but some were just not in character at all, and seemed put out that people were talking to them.”
    • “We were disappointed again to find hardly any people in the houses talking about what we were looking at. No one dressed up walking around/interacting with visitors. No gluten-free choices for hot food.”
    • “Have both chip shops open at the same time, one was closed the wait for chips was crazy. More operational shops where you can purchase items. A traditional tea room or restaurant that you can use.”

    Industrial Quarter – Colleague Familiarisation Sessions

    While preparations for the opening of our Industrial Quarter are well underway, opening its doors to the public during Red by Night, we are offering exclusive preview sessions for our colleagues. Led by our Interpretation & Research team, these sessions will provide a first hand look at the fascinating buildings within the Industrial Quarter.

    Mark your calendars for March 7th and March 14th, 2024, as we will be hosting two sessions on each date. The sessions will run for 30 minutes each, with timings at 9:00 am and 4:15 pm.
