    Reminder – Wellbeing Resources

With the current news cycle and unrest across the country, we recognise that colleagues may be affected. We want to take a moment to remind everyone about the Museum’s wellbeing resources, as well as kindly asking that we all look out for each other as we would at any other time.

    Resources include:

    • A team of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) to provide support to colleagues who are experiencing poor mental wellbeing or just need someone to talk to. You can find out more about who the Museum’s MHFAs are in this intranet article.
    • The Perkbox benefits portal, which includes a wellness hub with resources including webinars, videos, blogs and music which promotes wellbeing, health and happiness.
    • The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which is a free 24/7 confidential helpline with trained consultants to listen, advise, and support you with any worries. You can access EAP via Perkbox ‘Perks’ on the Perkbox app or by calling 0800 756 0861 and quoting ‘Perkbox’ and ‘Black Country Living Museum. If you would like to have access to Perkbox and/or would like to find more about it, please contact People & Culture by emailing [email protected].

Reminder: Car parking – Summer Holidays

As we head into a busy Summer season, we’d like to please remind colleagues about being mindful of space when they use the car park.

Could colleagues please fill up the car park one row at a time, without leaving any gaps. With your kind cooperation we can ensure that when visitors are directed to this car park, we can make the most of remaining space.

  • New Culture Survey

    New Culture Survey

We are required to collect and report data with regards to the representation of our colleague group, we do this through a ‘culture survey’.

Our last culture survey of all colleagues was carried out over 3 years ago. New colleagues complete the survey as part of their onboarding process. The data is required primarily for our funders, including Arts Council England (ACE), who require us to annually return on our representation levels and is also necessary for legal compliance and internal reporting purposes.

This year, ACE has made some changes and additions to the data they require, necessitating us to ask all colleagues to complete a new survey form.

Please note that all colleagues are required  to complete this form, upon receipt, even if your response is ’prefer not to say’  to each question. Below are responses to questions we anticipate you may have:

    • Why are you asking for this information? All organisations within the Arts Council England framework are required to provide the data requested in the enclosed survey as a key part of the funding requirements. As a Museum, we also have some legal obligations for reporting and monitoring data.
    • I have already provided this information before. Why are you asking for it again? It is essential that we maintain accurate data for our colleagues, so it is common practice to refresh this information periodically to ensure it is up-to-date. Our last culture survey update was over 3 years ago. Additionally, Arts Council England recently updated some of their reporting categories. As a result, we have adjusted our culture survey to align with these new categories. This means there are new questions that we have not asked you before, and some previously asked questions now offer more options. Therefore, we are asking you to complete a new culture survey. Finally, we also recognise that some colleagues may wish to update their previous responses to better reflect their current situation. This new culture survey provides an opportunity to do so.
    • Do I have to provide this information? To ensure the data accurately reflects our colleague base, we encourage you to answer each question as honestly as possible. If you do not wish to respond to a question, or all questions, please mark the “Prefer not to say” option.
    • Will this data be shared with others? No individual data is shared. All data is collected as a group of statistics and generically reported internally and externally, e.g. for funding requirements.
    • Will the data be held in my personnel file? No, the data will not be held in your personnel file. The data is transferred to a spreadsheet that does not contain individual names and is only accessible by the People & Culture team. The hardcopy forms are shredded. You will note that the enclosed form has a payroll number. This is simply to allow us to chase outstanding replies and trace the responses of leavers for removal. This enables the data to remain live.
    • Will my answers be linked back to me? No. We are not seeking to identify individual personal details, we simply need the raw data for statistical monitoring and generic reporting.
  • 1940s Staff Survey

    1940s Staff Survey

Thank you so much to everyone who took part in and supported our first 1940s event!

    1940s Weekend (daytime)

As always, your feedback is extremely valuable to us, so please take a few minutes to fill in our staff survey.

Overall visitors loved the atmosphere, the music, the traders and the characters and re-enactors who invited participation. New additions were also well received: the representation of Indian servicemen and women, fashion show, more vehicles. Visitors were less positive about their experience in the car park, transport, queueing for food, disabled access and not enough tea! (Britain was built on the cuppa). Some visitors felt that re-enactors and characters were sometimes more engaged with the audience than with each other.

    • 76% of visitors said the event was excellent – with a further 20% saying it was good.
    • 66% of people learnt something about migration to the Black Country
    • 80% of people felt they had an opportunity to participate
    • 83% of visitors who had food and drink said it was good/excellent

Some comments from visitors (both positive and constructive):

    • “Absolute assault on the senses, felt like if been transported back in time and the children were amazed by it all”
    • “The effort made to provide entertainment, the re-enactors, staff and the whole atmosphere was lovely”
    • “This is the best experience of my life, really take you back in time”
    • “I would want more interaction with characters more characters in costume and to stay in character found it boring walking in and out no one there”
    • “My only complaint is that there is not enough places to sit and have a cup of tea…we wanted wartime tea not in a take away cup”

    1940s Evening

Your feedback is very valuable to us, so please take a few minutes to fill in our staff survey.

Visitors enjoyed the entertainment and atmosphere on site, especially the D Day Darlings. Some visitors wanted more seating, both at the stages and for food and drink – as well as more food and drink outlets near stages and traders to reduce queues elsewhere.

    •  97% satisfaction rate with 78% of visitors stating that it was excellent
    • 92% of visitors said it was an immersive experience
    • 91% of visitors who had food and drink said it was good/excellent

Some comments from visitors (both positive and constructive):

    • “We visit many 40s events and this is one of the best.”
    • “The whole event was amazing from the stalls to the entertainment it was top class”
    • “Lots better having the music stages in a central position with the fair ground, it really added to the atmosphere.”
    • “For the evening I would strongly recommend putting seats in front of all the stages. A lot of visitors were elderly and having to stand.”
    • “More pop up drinks or tea areas around the stalls area and stage as long queues at pubs “
  • 1960s Staff Survey

    1960s Staff Survey

Thank you so much to everyone who took part in and supported our first 1960s event! It was a roaring success and the visitor response has been very positive (see below for ratings and comments). As always, your feedback is extremely valuable to us, so please take a few minutes to fill in our staff survey

    • 96% of visitors rated their overall experience of the programme as “good” or “excellent”
    • 87% felt the museum represented their heritage
    • 89% felt it was an immersive experience
    • 88% felt they had the opportunity to participate

Some comments from visitors (both positive and constructive):

    •  “Where do I start…the atmosphere was electric, the shops, the people, the staff, the music, the food, the fair…..I absolutely was blown away by the way this event was put on ..I hope you will do this again…The tribute band to the Beatles…they were absolutely amazing… thank you so much for all your hard work…it showed, I visit quite regularly and this evening was absolutely fantastic”
    • “The variety of music, the food venues open till later, all the shop proprietors very knowledgeable and informative and kept in character! Atmosphere, everyone joins in dressing the part”
    •  “I’ve been to many events at the Museum both as a visitor and staff. This is the best event I’ve attended. It was well thought out and the acts were all excellent”
    •  “Absolutely fantastic night would definitely come again what a performance by the beatles and the drag queen, the supremes too”
    •  “Took mom, 84, she has onset dementia. It was fantastic listening to her memories jogged by your museum, singing along to all the groups. We had your local Bobby arrest her. Fantastic night”
    •  “The event was great, but we felt there were too many acts performing at once in different areas, which made it hard to decide where to be. To alleviate this, I would suggest extending the event to 11:30 pm instead of 10:30 pm. This would give people more chance to feel less rushed and give the option to enjoy the evening for longer. We really enjoyed the drag act (Dahlia Rivers), but it was a shame she was inside where not many people were”
    •  “It was rather crowded and not enough food and drink vendors there were really long queues, should have been seating as lots of people were semi and disabled people”
    •  “Loved the live bands however the stages in the high street and folks park were too close and the AC30’s were drowned out by the bands on the other stage”
