    The Inclusive Presentation Tips guide has been produced by the Inclusive Storytelling Working Group to promote inclusive working practices. When presenting to an audience, it is likely that the people in the audience will have a range of access needs and come from a variety of communities. The tips outlined in this document will help you to ensure that your presentation is accessible and inclusive.

    It is also worth considering how you share information before, during and after your presentation, for instance:
    • Consider providing visual materials in advance or in alternative formats (e.g. print outs, large print)
    • If you plan to share the digital version of your slides with colleagues following your presentation, ensure that you use alt text for images (How to write effective alt text – Microsoft Support)

  • New safety barrier installed at clocking-in gate

    New safety barrier installed at clocking-in gate

    We’re pleased to share that a new safety barrier has been installed at the gate to protect colleagues as they come through to clock in.

    This improvement was made following a safety concern raised about staff stepping directly into the access road, where they may not be visible to moving vehicles. The barrier acts as a protective measure, ensuring a safer transition into the area.

    Thank you to everyone who brought this to our attention—your input helps us maintain a safer environment for all.

    We want to thank you, our committed, resilient team.

    Storms Bert and Darragh have made for a challenging start to the winter across the UK and here at the Museum. Snow, floods and gale force winds. No matter the conditions our visitors have been able to count on your efforts to keep them safe, informed and welcome. Colleagues both onsite and remote, working above and beyond, have really owned their part and shown how much they care on these trying weekends. You really have lived the Bostin’ Promise and we, and our visitors, are hugely grateful.

  • Audio descriptive and visual awareness training

    Audio descriptive and visual awareness training

    We are looking to recruit a cohort of historic characters to attend an audio descriptive training session, where you will learn about communicating effectively with blind and partially sighted visitors. The training will be facilitated by Vocal Eyes who believe blind and visually impaired people should have the best opportunities to experience and enjoy art and heritage.
    Available places: 12
    Who this training is for: Historic characters interested in delivering Access tours at the museum on a Saturday, as well as delivering outreach work offsite.
    When: Monday 25 November.
    Time: 12.30-4.30pm.
    Location: The Western Room – Learning Classroom 2.
    What you will learn:
    • Visual awareness: learn how to identify the barriers facing blind and partially sighted visitors attending heritage or Museum venue. You will be able to welcome blind and partially sighted visitors and give support in making our collections and events more accessible.
    • Audio description training: learn about audio descriptive principals bringing arts and heritage to life for blind and visually impaired people. It is the use of precise, logically structured language, interwoven with historic references and cultural narratives, to evoke an artefact or a place. It can be delivered live, as an audio-described tour, or as a recorded guide, for visitors to use independently.

    The selection process:

    If you are interested in the audio description and visual awareness training, please submit your supporting statement via Planday to Chantelle Richards or email [email protected] detailing why you would like to be a member of the cohort of trainees (100 words).
    Deadline for your submission: Wednesday 20 November.
    Successful applicants will receive confirmation of their acceptance on Thursday 21 November. Your availability on the training date is essential.
    Please bring your own packed lunch.
  • Training opportunities this Autumn

    Training opportunities this Autumn

    We are pleased to offer a series of training sessions this autumn to support colleagues in delivering inclusive and engaging experiences. Below are the upcoming opportunities:

    • Deaf awareness training: Suitable for all front-facing colleagues (please, attend only one session).

    When: Monday 11 November.

    Duration: 1.5 hours.

    Training times: 9.30am – 11am, or 11.30pm – 1.00pm, or 3pm – 4.30pm.

    Location: Hall 2.

    To sign up for the deaf awareness training, please put your name on this sheet,  alternatively, contact the Community Engagement team at [email protected].
    Capacity for 30-40 people each session.
    • Reminiscence Training: Historic characters who want to deliver reminiscence sessions.

    Limited spaces: 12 places – to attend an informal interview for selection will be required.

    Date: Monday 9 December.

    Duration: 10am-4pm.

    Location: Western Classroom 2.

    Winter opening hours and changes to online booking

    From Monday 4 November we’ll be moving to our winter opening hours. We’ll be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and will be open from Wednesday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm.

    From Wednesday 6 November, we’re removing the need to book a timeslot – visitors now only need to book their preferred date, and only when purchasing a new ticket.

    BCLM Members, valid UnChained Annual Pass holders, or visitors using a discount or vouchers (for example Tesco Clubcard vouchers), will simply need to bring their card, pass or vouchers to be scanned or redeemed at the till. Should visitors have any questions, please do refer them to the FAQs on our website.

  • We want your greenery!

    We want your greenery!

    Do you have rampant ivy or holly that needs pruning?  Do you have excess fir tree cuttings?  Or do you have other evergreen materials you can spare? To support our Christmas decoration making workshops on Monday 4 November and Tuesday 5 November, we need masses of lovely fresh seasonal greenery. If you have a garden, an allotment or access to any lush Christmassy greenery, we’re kindly asking that you snip it for us! 

    We’d love you to bring in whatever you have from Friday 1 November to Monday 4 November. If you have an allotment, it might be worth putting the call out to other plot holders – as we can never have too much!

    There will be buckets for you to pop the stems in to keep them nice and fresh at the compound at the top of site. The fresher the better so if you can leave it as late as possible to cut them and put it in water straight after cutting, we can make sure our wreaths, garlands and table decorations are as fresh and perky as possible for the festive season.

    The longest lasting and most festive of the greenery is beech, oak, rose hips, pine, old man’s beard, spruce, conifer, holly, ivy, fir, magnolia, hops and rosemary. We also welcome any pine cones or other festive finds. What a good excuse for a ramble in the woods!

    During the festive period, once buildings are decorated, if you are working in historic buildings and you are looking for greenery to refresh your building, please contact the Collections team. If you have any questions about decorating the buildings for Christmas, please speak to the Collections team or email [email protected].

    All Colleague Briefings – October 2024

    As part of our continual programme of ensuring engagement and communication across the Museum’s operational and strategic activity, we will be holding briefings to update all colleagues on the Museum’s progress and the plans for the remainder of 2024, as we head toward our busy winter period.
    These briefings will take place on:
    • Wednesday 16 October (can all office based colleagues aim to attend this session if it is a normal working day)
    • Saturday 19 October
    • Thursday 24 October
    All the briefings will take place in Hall 2 and will commence at 9am, finishing at 9.30am.
    • Many of you will already be scheduled by your line managers to attend one of these sessions. If you have not yet been scheduled, please contact your line manager.
    • All contracted colleagues are mandated to attend these sessions. We would also strongly urge colleagues from both our volunteer and casual community to all attend.
    • You only need to attend one of the briefing sessions.
