  • Volunteers- We Need You!

The Christmas events are fantastic fun for all of those that attend….the aftermath and the clean up operation not so much! (Although there will be mince pies!)

The cleaning team do a great job of ensuring that the Museum maintains high standards of cleanliness but they could really do with some extra help after the Christmas evening events and we are appealing for some goodwill from staff to volunteer to help on the mornings of 9th,10th, 16th and 17th December between 8am-10am.

If you are able to offer to help please let HR (Michaela) know ASAP in person, via email or by telephone.

    Thank you!

  • Staffing Restructure Proposal – Retail & Admissions, Hire & Hospitality and Development

    Background

Securing funding for BCLM: Forging Ahead, coupled with the continued growth of the Museum’s visitor and support/donor base has resulted in the need to review and propose a restructure in three areas of the Museum’s operation.  The purpose of this proposed restructure is to improve results by providing the capacity and skills within the Museum teams to develop long-term relationships with visitors, supporters, donors, customers and corporate organisations.

The proposals, outlined here, would establish a staff structure to enable the Museum to continue to grow audience engagement and secure the financial support to enable BCLM: Forging Ahead to be achieved in full.

    The Proposals

The roles and responsibilities of the teams and functions, as well as those that they interact with, have been reviewed by the Leadership Team, and the Head of Retail & Admissions and General Manager (Food & Drink).

As a result of this review the following is proposed:

    • Introduction of new staff structures for Retail & Admissions and Development.
    • Some changes to responsibilities and functions.

The proposals, if adopted, would place the following roles at risk of redundancy:

    • Hire & Hospitality Sales Manager
    • Development Manager (Individuals & Corporate)
    • Team Managers, Retail & Admissions (x2 posts)

    Objectives

In summary, the proposals are designed to have the following impacts on the Museum:

    (a)        Enhanced customer service, through a more customer focused and centralised function for visitor enquiries, bookings and Museum membership.

    (b)        Improved, long-term, financially-beneficial relationships with businesses.

    (c)        Improved levels of financial and in-kind backing from supporters and donors.

    (d)        Enhanced marketing and cross-promotions due to improved market and customer intelligence.

    (e)        Improved retail results through better retail management and product development for the Museum Shops and the ability to grow onsite retail opportunities.

    Consultation Process and Timetable

Initial individual meetings have taken place with staff whose posts are at risk of redundancy and the proposals have also been shared with the Staff Consultative Forum.

We are now releasing them to staff for a four week period for information sharing, consultation and to respond to requests for clarification. You can find hard copies of the proposal document, including proposed structures, functions, responsibilities and further details in the following communal staff areas:

    • Rolfe St office noticeboard
    • The Guide Hut noticeboard
    • Staff room above Emile Doo’s Chemist

Concurrently, internal and external recruitment and assimilation exercises will be taking place alongside any external recruitment activity as required, in-line with best practice and the Museum’s statutory obligations, under the guidance of the Museum’s Head of Human Resource Development.

The proposed new roles will be advertised across a range of external sources and on the BCLM website and staff intranet. Staff who wish to apply may obtain copies of application forms and job profiles from the Visitor Reception.

No appointments will be made until the period of consultation has come to an end on 6 November. The consultation period may be extended if there are alternatives proposed which may require further investigation.

Update 26 Jun: applicants have now been selected.

In return she will share how we use our CRM, and provide insight into the overall marketing strategy.

If you’ve ever fancied going behind the scenes at the UK’s most popular attraction (6.42m in 2017), now is your chance!

We’re delighted to announce that the Museum has been selected as on of the partners in the British Museum’s Knowledge Exchange Programme for 2017. Knowledge Exchange offers the opportunity of a fully funded and co-ordinated five day professional exchange between paid staff, in any role, at selected partner museums and the British Museum. The British Museum will take on one employee from each of its partner museums, and as part of the scheme pays for all travel, accommodation and subsistence costs associated with the exchanges.

The programme is part of the wide-ranging National Programmes at the British Museum, which partners with around 250 UK organisations a year through single-object spotlight tours, touring exhibitions, partnership galleries, loans and skills development initiatives. The exchanges are organised by the UK Partnerships Co-ordinator at the British Museum and are made possible by the generous support of the Vivmar Foundation.

“My experience during my exchange at the British Museum exceeded my expectations and hopes. I returned to my museum not only with new ideas and insights but also with increased confidence in what we already offer at our museum and a fresh inspiration to adapt and develop our activity” – Knowledge Exchange participant, 2016

Each exchange is unique and it is created based on the selected participants’ application form. Please not that unfortunately, this exchange is not available for volunteers.

    How do I apply?

In order to apply, please review the structure of the British Museum and complete the below application form by 5pm on 12 May 2017 and return to [email protected]. Applications will then be sent to the British Museum who will select a candidate for whom they can best meet the requirements and expectations of the placement. Please discuss any applications with your line manager beforehand, ensuring that you have approval before submission.

  • Lone Working Policy: Update

    Lone Working Policy: Update

    What does it mean?

Further to the discussions which took place earlier in the summer, it has now been decided that the whole site will be open to staff between the hours of 0800 and 1800 only on a year-round basis with effect from Monday 31 October.

In the mornings, staff should not access the building before the Duty Manager arrives.

In the evenings, the only exception to this will be where the IT Manager needs to work late due to the nature of his role, but this does not mean other staff can stay late because Andy is here.

If there is a reason where you need to stay late unexpectedly, you must contact the Duty Manager immediately to make them aware that you will need to work slightly later, but this is to be by exception rather than as a regular occurrence. The lone working policy is attached for your reference.

What if I still have concerns?

There were some reservations expressed by some staff around the requirement to work later for a variety of reasons; your line managers have been made aware of your concerns and will address these with you individually to try and resolve these.

If you have any questions or issues about this, please speak to your line manager.

    Thank you for your co-operation.
