  • Wellbeing and engagement survey – Results

Wellbeing and engagement survey – Results

Thank you to all colleagues who participated in providing feedback via our wellbeing survey about our events, communication methods, and the Perkbox benefits platform. Your input is invaluable and has helped us understand various aspects of our operations.

    Utilisation of benefits

    • Complimentary admission tickets for family and friends are the most frequently used benefit, with 82 respondents taking advantage of them.
    • Food units discounts are also popular, with 74 respondents using these benefits. We encourage everyone to use your staff discount of 25% across all food and beverage units (excluding alcohol) and 15% on Gift Shop purchases.
    • Colleague socials (parties) are enjoyed by 42 respondents. We look forward to welcoming even more colleagues to our upcoming wellbeing group events.

    Barriers to benefit usage

    • Lack of awareness and lack of interest, reported by 25% of respondents.
    • However, 28 respondents indicated these issues do not apply to them, as they actively use the benefits. We’re pleased to see this!

    Awareness and satisfaction with Perkbox

    • 64 respondents are aware of the Perkbox platform and know how to access it.

We appreciate all suggestions for improving Perkbox and are carefully considering your feedback.

    Communication preferences

    • Email is the most common method, used by 84 respondents.
    • BCLM Intranet is also widely utilised, with 68 respondents.
    • Newsletters are followed by 36 respondents.
    • Social media and noticeboards are used less frequently.
    • Planday and team meetings are used by 35 and 27 respondents, respectively.

Please remember that social events, important Museum notices, and the internal newsletter are updated monthly on noticeboards and in a specific folder for the internal newsletter. We will continue to use Planday, emails, and the Intranet as our main communication tools, so please check these regularly.

    Colleague satisfaction with Museum communications

The effectiveness of Museum communications received an average rating of 3.52, on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being “very good” and 1 being “not very good.” We value your feedback and suggestions on improving our internal communications, and your input will help us become more effective.

    Interest in sharing skills

    • Knitting, sewing, or crochet is the most popular skill, with 13 respondents willing to share. With autumn and winter approaching, we’ll explore these ideas and perhaps organise sessions to crochet some gloves for the season!
    • Local history knowledge and cooking are also areas of interest, with 9 and 6 respondents respectively. For those interested, we have a cookie-making event coming up on Monday, 9 September, with Rory and Josh.

In light of these results, Susannah Green will organise sessions to help you better understand and use the benefits available through Perkbox. These sessions will be held as follows:

    • Friday 13 September, 10:00am – Canalside Quiet Room
    • Tuesday 17 September, 3:00pm – Bottle & Glass Training Room
    • Wednesday 18 September, 10:30am – Guide Hut

We hope these sessions will assist you in making the most of your Perkbox benefits. Please email [email protected] for more information on this.

Thank you once again for your valuable feedback.

  • John H Hughes (1943-2024)

    John H Hughes (1943-2024)

With sadness, yesterday we received news John Hughes passed away last week aged 81.

Some of you will remember John was the Chair of the Board for nine years (2006-2015) having joined the Board in 2004. John was committed to the Museum and the positive impact of its cause, and dearly loved the company of Black Country folk. John was central to modernising and strengthening the Board of Trustees, and further professionalising our organisation. He also helped to navigate and find the sweet spot of simultaneously being a successful museum, charity and visitor attraction.

After John retired from the Board, he and his wife Carol continued to be regular visitors to the Museum, supporting many of our events and occasions. John also generously funded training grants for staff at the Museum over a number of years after retiring.

John received an honorary doctorate from the University of Wolverhampton (Faculty of Social Sciences) in 2013, recognising his work in industry and at the Museum.

John will be remembered with affection and admiration; a feeling shared, we are sure, by others at the Museum.

    Rest in Peace.

    Andrew Lovett OBE
    Chief Executive

    Dr Paul Belford
    Chair of Trustees

  • Reminder – Wellbeing Resources

    Reminder – Wellbeing Resources

With the current news cycle and unrest across the country, we recognise that colleagues may be affected. We want to take a moment to remind everyone about the Museum’s wellbeing resources, as well as kindly asking that we all look out for each other as we would at any other time.

    Resources include:

    • A team of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) to provide support to colleagues who are experiencing poor mental wellbeing or just need someone to talk to. You can find out more about who the Museum’s MHFAs are in this intranet article.
    • The Perkbox benefits portal, which includes a wellness hub with resources including webinars, videos, blogs and music which promotes wellbeing, health and happiness.
    • The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which is a free 24/7 confidential helpline with trained consultants to listen, advise, and support you with any worries. You can access EAP via Perkbox ‘Perks’ on the Perkbox app or by calling 0800 756 0861 and quoting ‘Perkbox’ and ‘Black Country Living Museum. If you would like to have access to Perkbox and/or would like to find more about it, please contact People & Culture by emailing [email protected].
  • Milestone anniversary for Paul

    Milestone anniversary for Paul

Paul Raybould, our senior mechanic, is marking an impressive milestone this August – it has been 50 years since he first began his career as an apprentice!

On 5 August 1974, at the age of 16, Paul started his apprenticeship at Bradburn & Wedge, a Wolverhampton garage that was founded in 1915 by William Howard Bradburn out of a former horse tramp depo on Darlington Street.

Paul’s career has now come full circle, as he’s back working within a Bradburn & Wedge garage again – in our workshop based on the frontage of the Darlington Street premise.

“I’m incredibly proud to have started my career at Bradburn & Wedge and to now be finishing it working on these beautiful old vehicles,” Paul says. “It’s come full circle in the best possible way.”

    Congratulations, Paul!

  • Good job, first responders!

    Good job, first responders!

Our first aiders have had to deal with some challenging and high-risk incidents recently including a stroke and blood clot. Their speed and calmness of response have contributed to preventing further escalation of the impact of the initial injury. There are many other examples where their reactions have been amazing.

We would like to thank all our first responders, including mental health first aiders and fire wardens.

  • Reminder: Car parking – Summer Holidays

Reminder: Car parking – Summer Holidays

As we head into a busy Summer season, we’d like to please remind colleagues about being mindful of space when they use the car park.

Could colleagues please fill up the car park one row at a time, without leaving any gaps. With your kind cooperation we can ensure that when visitors are directed to this car park, we can make the most of remaining space.
