  • A Bostin’ Jubilee Bash – get involved!

    To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, we’re having a bostin’ Jubilee bash every day during Whitsun half term (28th May – 5th June) and we want you to join in!

    We’ll be commemorating past monarchs: recreating community celebrations for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in the Village and George VI’s coronation on OBR. We’re then bringing the story up to date in and around Gripton’s, celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s televised coronation in 1953. Alongside many other characters, visitors will meet Mr Singh who moved to the Black Country from the Punjab in 1951. The schoolroom will be updated to 1953 to tell a story of Queen and Commonwealth.

    Decoration in communities was important – including all kinds of flags. In the title image, you can see the Union Flag alongside the Lion of Scotland, the South African Flag and the Red Ensign Star of British India on a pub in Darlaston in 1953.

    As with all street parties – food and drink will play an important role. As such, we’ll have a celebration jelly as well as the baker’s special contribution: a loaf in the shape of a crown. Visitors will be able to buy jam tarts, jellies, fruit cake and samosas.

    The day will end with visitors taking part in a parade across the site from 1:30pm, and a rousing rendition of God Save the Queen on the canal dock to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

    We need your help!
    • Do you have any flags or bunting at home which we could borrow for the duration of the event?
    We are looking for flags and bunting made from cotton/linen/canvas (not polyester). They don’t have to be Union flags, or red, white and blue – all Commonwealth Nation flags are welcome. This includes St George’s Flags, Royal Banners of Scotland and other Commonwealth countries. We can return them to you at the end of the event.
    • Fancy getting crafty, helping us to make banners and decorations?
    Are you free on Friday 29th April (10-12.30pm) or (1.30-4.30pm) to help us recreate a banner like the one below, as well as making bunting and flags? We have hundreds of metal bottle tops already, we just need your help to glue the tops onto the fabric to form the letters on the banner.

  • People News Update 21/04/2022

    Welcomes

    Following a successful assessment day on 14 April 2022, we are welcoming a number of new casual colleagues in our Enterprise, Admissions and Historic Character teams over the next few weeks.

    We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Claire Packer as Head of Audiences & Communications. Claire will officially join us towards the end of June/beginning of July but will visiting the Museum to get an early understanding of how the Museum works and meet new colleagues ahead of her ‘official’ start date. Claire has a wealth of marketing and communications experience, having most recently worked as Communications Manager at the University of Birmingham.

     

    Farewells

    Kaye Williams left the Cleaning team on 17 April 2022 after 5 years at the Museum to pursue a career in residential care.

    Jack Turner, Enterprise Team Member, leaves on 21 April 2022. Jack has worked at the Museum alongside studying his PGCE, having now qualified as a teacher he leaves us to pursue his teaching career at Wolverhampton College.

    Ben Peers, Duty Manager, leaves on 22 April 2022 to relocate with his wife to Scotland.

    We extend our best wishes for the future to Kaye, Jack and Ben.

     

    Other news

    Annie-Rose Pitman who joined us on a fixed term contract has been permanently appointed in the role of Digital Marketing Administrator.

    Demi Whitehouse and Kirsty Clark-Biles have been appointed as Enterprise Team Managers, we wish them every success in their new role.

  • Andrew discusses Peaky Blinders with BBCR4 Today programme

    Following the season finale of the last ever series of Peaky Blinders airing on Sunday night on BBC One, Andrew Lovett appeared on BBC Radio 4’s the Today programme to discuss the impact of the show on the Museum as well as the wider West Midlands.

  • Winners at the West Midlands Tourism Awards!

    On Thursday 31 March, Black Country Living Museum were thrilled to be crowned with the Resilience and Innovation Award at the 2022 West Midlands Tourism Awards.

    This was a newly created category for this year, which sought to recognise how organisations in the tourism sector adapted when faced with the difficult circumstances that Covid-19 presented.

    The Museum was recognised for the many ways that it was able to connect with audiences during the difficult year it faced in 2021. This included being able to provide a space for the NHS to distribute vaccines to the local community, connecting with worldwide audiences through TikTok, and hosting the production of a number of high profile filming projects.

    Andrew Lovett, CEO, said: “I would like to extend my thanks to everyone here at the Museum for their combined efforts over what has been a trying year for us all. The award for which we were nominated was highly competitive with a number of excellent organisations in the running, so it brings me great joy to see us recognised as winners in this category. This award reaffirms our collective resilience and creativity during 2021 in the face of difficult circumstances.”

    Paul Crofts, COO, added: “A huge, huge well done to everyone across the teams in your effort, professionalism, innovation and work in once again seeing the museum recognised.”

    Following  success in the regional awards, the Museum will be put forward for the same category in the national awards.

  • People News Update 1 April 2022

    Welcomes

    Annie-Rose Pitman has joined us as Marketing Administrator on a fixed term contract. Annie has worked on various promotional campaigns and brings a wealth of knowledge and online presence.

    Mai Williams has joined as Sales & Ticketing Administrator joined us from NHS Dudley Group supporting the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme as an Administrator. Mai also has a background in travel & tourism.

    Early April we have Teresa Huxtable, Sales & Ticketing Administrator, Sarah Doherty, Collections Assistant and Lisa Bates Engineering Coordinator joining us.

    Teresa joins us from Dudley metropolitan Council where she was a Business Support Coordinator.

    Sarah previously completed a placement with us in our Collections Team and will be joining us a Collections Assistant.

    Lisa joins us from Equans UK, Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospital as an Engineering Coordinator.

    We will also be welcoming a number of new casual colleagues in Enterprise.

    Farewells

    We say goodbye to a number of colleagues in the Enterprise Team, Matt Humpage leaves us to join the Newhampton Arts Centre and Bethan Johnson leaves us to join the Police.

    We also say goodbye to Gavin O’Neill, Museum Enterprises Manager. Gavin has played an integral role in developing the Enterprise operation and will be greatly missed. Gavin moves onto pastures new, with a hope to return to Ireland in the near future.

  • Staff survey – Fiendish Felons

    In order to help us shape and improve our programmes for the future, we are asking for all front line staff to complete a survey about their experience of working during our Fiendish Felons themed February half term.

    “As a member of frontline staff in direct contact with the visitors, you are key to our understanding of how visitors experience our public programmes and events. You are also key to their success. Your valuable feedback will inform how we plan programmes going forward and ensure that you have the tools and training to support you to deliver the very best visitor experience.”

  • National Lottery Open Days at BCLM

    This March, the National Lottery are inviting organisations to take part in National Lottery Open Week.

    National Lottery Heritage Fund have made a significant investment in our brand new 1940s-60s development BCLM Forging Ahead. As our way of saying a big “Thank You” to our visitors and supporters, we are giving National Lottery players the opportunity to visit the Museum for free with two free entry days* on Sun 20 and Fri 25 March.

    As well as our open dates, the People & Culture team are organising a recruitment fair on the afternoon of each of our free days, to help us spread awareness of future employment opportunities at the Museum as part of the new development. Colleges and local community groups have been invited to attend the fair (recruitment fair invitees have been sent special tickets) but anyone who is booked to visit on the day is welcome to drop in.

    Tickets for the National Lottery Open Days must be pre-booked in advance via our website. Visitors simply need to show their valid National Lottery play (either an in-app play, scratch card or Lottery play) along with their timed entry booking slot on arrival. 

     

  • Association of Independent Museums – Statement on Ukraine

    Black Country Living Museum is a member of the Association of Independent Museums. In his capacity as Chair of the Association, Andrew has published the following statement on behalf of all AIM members.

    The Association of Independent Museums condemns the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by the Russian military and stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

    We share the concern of the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) regarding the risks faced by museum professionals in Ukraine, and the damage of this aggression on Ukraine’s material culture.

    Alongside all those in Ukraine we express our solidarity with museum colleagues and understand that AIM members will be seeking practical ways to offer help.

  • Ticket Swap Scheme 2022

    Some good news!

    We are delighted to confirm that not only is the ticket swap back, but we have been successful in adding some brilliant new partners to the scheme, in addition to the usual list we now have: The Snowdome, Twycross Zoo, Silverstone, Kenilworth Castle, Merlin (Sealife & Legoland), The Wolves Museum and Blenheim Palace. 

    For new colleagues, the ticket swap scheme is an annual ballot to obtain free tickets for one of the list below.
