  • Reset’s All-colleague briefings – Q&A

    Reset’s All-colleague briefings – Q&A

    Following this years reset period, please find a summary of Q&A;

Will the Metro open this year? When it does open, do we expect to see an uplift on visitor attendance?

It was announced on 22 January that the Dudley extension will open for passengers at the end of August this year. It will certainly have a positive impact for our visitors, for our events and for our corporate hospitality bookings.

What was the outcome of the dog day trials? Will they be continuing?

We’re continuing with the dog day trials until February half-term, which will give us more data on how they’ve been received. A review meeting took place at the end of January.

Are we still reaching for 500k visitor attendance? Is that a target we must reach in order to allow things to happen at the Museum?

500k visitors is a reasonable figure to aim for, and more attendance means more income and therefore investment. It’s also important to track revenue growth independent of attendance, as the Museum has followed and indeed outperformed a wider trend of increased spend in ‘Enterprises’, helping us grow and invest while visitation remains challenged. Higher attendance and income will also help us apply for funding for specific projects, especially to demonstrate how the Museum is investing in itself.

Is there any news on the Dudley bus exchange development?

We’re not as close to this development as perhaps we could be. Hopefully an improved service and better-quality buses will have an impact for our visitors. We will reach out to the bus providers to discuss how we can work more closely with them.

Could we offer a discounted ticket price for those visitors using the Metro or bus?

Yes, this is on our mind. We also have strong links with the West Midlands Mayor and are discussing with him the potential for a tourism levy, which may fund free transport, as is the case in some European cities.

Is there any update on the Museums trams?

Work is needed on the overhead cables and of course the tracks. There is a lot to do to get our trams running again and we’ll need funding. It is still our ambition and there are funds out there that would help.

    Updates on previous questions:

    • We submitted an application to Arts Council England’s MEND fund (Museum Estate & Development), which seeks to repair five roofs across site, including the Trap Shop. The outcome of this application is expected in March 2026.
    • Woodside Library’s re-build is ongoing and is expected to open in March.
    • We will relaunch the Environmental Working Group (previously known as the Green Group) in Q1 of this year.
  • Opple A Day – Half Term programme overview

Opple A Day – Half Term programme overview

    Date and times:

    Saturday 14 to Sunday 22 February 10am – 4pm

    Programme concept:

How have people looked after their health in the past? Visitors will explore how people have treated illnesses at home in the past, looking at common home remedies, healthy eating, living conditions including how they got rid of toilet waste. There will also be talk of the developments in vaccinations in the Infant Welfare Centre.

Characters will be demonstrating road safety techniques of the past with the Tufty Club, and general first aid, Girl Guide style. People found forms of exercise, clubs and societies to improve both their physical fitness and mental wellbeing in the past just like people do today. Have those interests and groups changed over time?

Link to map / activity trail. Still awaiting the trail.

  • Annual AIM Conference 2026

    Annual AIM Conference 2026

The AIM (Association of Independent Museums) annual Conference will be held at Ushaw Historic House, Chapels and Gardens, and Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, Co Durham on 10 & 11 June 2026.

This year’s conference theme of ‘Independent advantage: Rethinking your museum operating model’ will see colleagues from across the UK explore; What defines a truly successful museum? This perennial question lies at the heart of this year’s conference. Drawing on groundbreaking new research into the sector’s most effective business models, it will unpack the essential strategies and practical steps your institution needs to succeed.

This year promises a dynamic mix of inspiration, practical advice, and sector-wide collaboration. Two days of learning, networking, and sharing strategies that will act as a catalyst for change. As ever with the AIM Conference, delegates can look forward to a schedule packed with inspirational and practical advice, debate and discussion.

We are offering up to 3 colleagues the opportunity to attend this year’s conference. All you need to do is complete an expression of interest and provide us with some information as to how you think this will be of benefit to you in your role here at BCLM.

More information is available on the AIM website; AIM Conference 2026 – AIM – Association of Independent Museums

  • Red By Night event – postponed

Red By Night event – postponed

After careful consideration we have made the decision to postpone our Red By Night event, which was due to take place on Saturday 21 March. The new date will be Saturday 3 October. The additional time will allow us to ensure that we’re able to deliver the best possible visitor experience and fully do justice to the planned programme.

Customers who have already purchased tickets have been contacted and have been offered either a transfer of their booking or a refund.

We appreciate that this change may have implications for teams across the organisation, and we thank everyone for their flexibility and continued support.

  • Annual Leave Buy & Sell Scheme 2026

Annual Leave Buy & Sell Scheme 2026

We are pleased to confirm that employees are now able to submit a request under the Annual Leave Buy & Sell Scheme for the 2026/2027 leave year.

Employees who wish to make a request must familiarise themselves with the Museum’s Buying & Selling Annual Leave Scheme and complete a Buying & Selling Form. Requests under the scheme will require approval from the employee’s line manager and the People team.

Please note the maximum amount of annual leave an employee may buy or sell is the equivalent of one contractual week, however, the total holiday entitlement inclusive of any carry over or purchase of holiday cannot exceed 38 days for full time employees or the equivalent for part time employees.

If the request to buy or sell annual leave is approved, employees will be notified of the resulting change in their monthly salary. Adjustments in pay as a result of the scheme will commence from April, for a period of 12 months.

Requests must be received by the People team by no later than Friday 6 March 2025.

Requests to Carry Over Annual Leave

As a reminder, ordinarily untaken leave cannot be carried forward into the next leave year and will be lost. However, in exceptional circumstances a maximum of one contractual week may be carried over from one holiday year to the next. Please note that the total holiday entitlement inclusive of carry over (if approved) cannot exceed 38 days for full time employees or the equivalent for part time employees.

Approval must be sought from an employee’s line manager and the People team if an employee wishes to carry forward any annual leave into the next leave year. Employees should complete a Carry Over of Annual Leave Request Form.

All requests for carry over of annual leave need to be submitted 4 weeks prior to the end of the leave year.

If a request to carry over annual leave is approved, employees will be notified of this in writing through the return of the Carry Over of Annual Leave Request Form.

Please refer to the Museum’s Annual Leave Policy for further information.

    Annual Leave Entitlement on Systems

Annual leave entitlements will be updated on Myhrtoolkit and Planday in April once all requests for the above have been received and processed.

If you have any queries in relation to the above, please contact the People team ([email protected])

  • Colleague tickets – available soon

    Colleague tickets – available soon

Following the launch of our brand new ticketing system and website, we’re now working through and finessing all of our processes.

This means that, for the time being, your colleague allocation of general admission tickets is not yet available to redeem. If you would like to visit for general admission using your colleague allocation, please make yourself known to the admissions team on arrival – we will record this and deduct those tickets from your allocation when colleague admission tickets are live in the system.

Special event tickets are not yet available for colleagues to purchase using their colleague discount. An allocation of colleague tickets for special events is ring-fenced, so we thank you for your patience while we work on this in the background – we’ll share an update as soon as tickets are available.

Thank you again for your support and patience while we’re bringing you the brand new system.

    Underground Mine – Essential Maintenance

Following routine site-wide testing, we have discovered that some essential maintenance is required in the Underground Mine. For the health and safety of our colleagues and visitors, it is important that this work is completed promptly which means that the experience will remain closed for the time being while work is carried out.
