    We want to thank you, our committed, resilient team.

    Storms Bert and Darragh have made for a challenging start to the winter across the UK and here at the Museum. Snow, floods and gale force winds. No matter the conditions our visitors have been able to count on your efforts to keep them safe, informed and welcome. Colleagues both onsite and remote, working above and beyond, have really owned their part and shown how much they care on these trying weekends. You really have lived the Bostin’ Promise and we, and our visitors, are hugely grateful.

    There is currently a yellow weather warning in place for the Black Country this weekend.

    At this present time, the Museum will be open tomorrow and Sunday 8 December. Santa Hunts will go ahead as planned but there will be some mitigations in place across the site.

    A further communication will be sent if the situation changes.

    Free Christmas travel across the West Midlands

    Colleagues, exciting news! Next week – from Monday 9 December to Friday 13 December – all bus services across the West Midlands will be free to use from 7pm onwards. This initiative is led by the Mayor of the West Midlands in partnership with local operators, including Transport for West Midlands.

    It’s a perfect opportunity to save money on evening outings, whether it’s for late-night Christmas shopping, festive parties, or pantomimes. No tickets or passes are required, just hop on and enjoy the journey!

    The scheme aims to encourage sustainable travel, reduce road congestion, and support local businesses during the busy holiday season.

    Festival of Light – Colleague evaluation survey

    Thank you to everyone who participated in our Festival of Light Event. We have had some brilliant feedback for the programme and now we need to hear from you!

    Please take a few minutes to fill in our colleague survey to tell us what you think.

    Here are some highlights of what our visitors thought:

    “The festival of light was excellent! The light parade was particularly impressive and there was a real sense of togetherness and community there”

    • 78% of visitors rated their overall experience of the programme as “good” or “excellent”
    • 86% of visitors used their Trail which is typically higher than average usage and it scored a rating of 85%.
    • 95% of visitors were aware of the link between Festival of Light and Diwali
    • Visitors repeatedly mentioned that they enjoyed speaking to roaming characters and participating with the investigation story line.
    • Visitors mentioned that they spent a lot of time in queues, that there needed to be more authentic South Asian food and more light displays: “More Indian food options and more light effects”

    Dates:

    • Unwrapping (weekdays from Wednesday 4 December – Friday 20 December)
    • Unwrapping PLUS (weekends from Saturday 30 November and school holidays from Saturday 21 December – Sunday 5 January)

    Concept:

    The festive season is in full swing at Black Country Living Museum until Sunday 5 January. Visitors can bring their friends and family along to ‘ave a warm by the hearth; the fires are lit, the stockings are hung and the period shops and houses are brimming with Christmas cheer! For the Unwrapping PLUS dates only, visitors can follow our family Christmas trail to explore stories of Christmases past, they can enjoy their favourite seasonal tunes and join in with festive crafts.

    Safe together at BCLM: Fire safety.

    Fire can cause damage to property, serious injury, and even loss of life.

    A fire needs three elements to ignite and sustain:

    1. Heat: a source of ignition, e.g., faulty electrical equipment or a lit cigarette.
    2. Fuel: combustible materials such as paper, cardboard, or wood.
    3. Oxygen: provided by natural airflow through open doors, windows, etc.

    By removing any one of these elements, a fire cannot continue.

    Fire prevention tips:

    • Maintain control over waste materials; ensure rubbish does not pile up around the site.
    • Familiarise yourself with the correct firefighting equipment in your area, but only use it if:
      • It is suitable for the type of fire.
      • You have received proper training to operate it.
      • If you are not trained or the equipment is unavailable, follow the evacuation procedures clearly posted throughout the site.

    By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can help minimise fire risks and ensure safety for everyone.

    The Museum is looking wonderfully festive ahead of our Christmas programme starting tomorrow, and we’ve already welcomed our first Santa Hunt visitors.

    As we will be delivering four Christmas evenings (Glad Tidings) in a row (20-23 December, plus 13 and 14 December), we’ve decided to close the Museum on Wednesday 18 December, in addition to the usual Monday and Tuesday closures (16-17 December).

    Office based colleagues can come to site as normal on this date. Hourly and contracted staff will receive direction from their line manager.

    Welcomes

    In early November, we were delighted to welcome Donna Bloomer to the Programme Development Team as a Little Makers Tutor.

    This month we also welcomed a number of casual Enterprise Team Members to the Museum following a successful partnership with the Skill-Shop Merryhill, and Dudley College. This wonderful initiative has allowed us to offer positions to those in the local community seeking employment.

    Additionally, we’re pleased to introduce new casual team members to our Admissions Team, who have joined us as Visitor Welcome & Admissions Team Members.

    Farewells

    At the end of October we said goodbye to Jenny Barton, Visitor Welcome & Admissions Team Member who left the admissions team.

    Earlier this month, we also bid farewell to Franc Marrocco, Enterprise Team Manager (Gift), after 7 impactful years at the Museum. Franc joined us in October 2017 as a casual demonstrator in the Transport Team, progressed to Retail Manager in 2018, and ultimately became Enterprise Team Manager (Gift) in 2021.

    Also this month, Loren Dunn and Ellie Elliott, both Enterprise Team Members, departed the Enterprise Team.

    We extend our thanks to each of them for their contributions and wish them all the very best.
