Back Home, our 1940s event, is coming up this weekend (Sat 9 & Sun 10 July)!
Visitors will experience the sights and sounds of 1940s Britain as we head back in time to the 1940s this weekend. Our Canalside village will be transformed with a host of historic costumed characters, vintage vehicles, and decoration as we explore this pivotal period of British history.
Our visitors will discover how the people of the Black Country came together against difficult odds to support the war effort. They’ll learn about the fearless contributions of ARP wardens, the resourcefulness of those at home, and the vital contribution of the home guard. Plus, there will be lots of vintage ephemera, from 1940s dresses and suits to homewares, available at the memorabilia markets.
Entertainment will include The D-Day Darlings, the Kalamazoo Dance Band, and visitors will have a chance to meet key characters too including Winston Churchill and George Formby. Plus, over 200 external historic re-enactors will be joining us for the whole weekend!
Plus, also happening this weekend are our Access Tours, Wartime Kitchens and Gardens. With our audio descriptive tour at 10:30 and our BSL tour at 2:00, visitors on the tour will discover the history of “growing your own” during wartime. Gardens were dug up for allotment space, housewives had to deal with rationing, and families were introduced to the culinary delights of Woolton pie, Spam and even nettle soup. On this tour, visitors will enjoy tales from those who remember wartime cookery and “Digging for Victory”.
