    Mon 7 Aug – works commencing on Woodside Library

    We’re pleased to share that from this Monday, 7 Aug, the Woodside Library build contract will start.

    The company (Gravitas) will begin to bring in some heavy duty equipment from Monday. As such, the Museum will need to put in some temporary measures to ensure that all colleagues, contractors and guests are safe.

    The following measures will be in place until 10:00 Monday:

    • Access to the new town will be severely limited.
    • There will be no access via the street to the fronts of the shop.
    • Staff should access their shops via the rear doors, and the street from the 1930s street and under Hartills arch.
    • Should staff need to access the town, the Duty Manager should be called to provide support and access.
    • Access to the Albion Road path and roadway will be severely limited.
    • Staff should access the Museum via the road that leads to Folkes Park and the WI.
    • Extra care should be taken when accessing the Canalside offices.

    After careful deliberation, our People & Culture team has now opened up an additional date for our all-colleague briefings, for this Saturday (5 Aug). This is to allow those who are only here on weekends to attend.

    For clarity, this new date will be:

    People & Culture have now added the new date to the original booking spreadsheet, please ensure you sign up.

    1940s weekend – staff survey

    Hello all,

    We want to share some of the highlights from our 1940s visitor feedback survey!

    • 93% satisfaction rate (with 71% excellent)
    • 84% learned something new about the 1940s
    • 91% thought the event was an immersive experience, with 83% saying they felt they had an opportunity to participate.

    Qualitative feedback included:

    • The music: piano and accordion players who encourage visitors to join in as well as the various acts (Bluebird Belles, D Day Darlings, Flanagan and Allen)
    • Atmosphere: the re-enactors, people dressed up
    • “An excellent venue and must be one of the best 1940s events in the Country”
    • “The positive attitude of the staff at every activity to ensure you got the most out of your visit.”
    • “The fantastic new 1940/50’s street and the atmosphere created by the people in the themed clothing”
    • “Car parking was difficult”
    • “ A schedule of activities could have been offered”

    Summer Lates – programme overview

    Dates: Friday 4, 11, 18, 21 Aug & Fri 1 Sep

    Concept: On Fridays throughout the summer, we’re extending our opening hours to 8.00pm and visitors can bag a discounted ticket for just £7.50*!

    Enjoy the Museum as the sun sets with our Summer Tunes through Time activities. Hear live music performances, grab a bite to eat at Hobbs & Sons Fish and Chip Shop and enjoy a refreshing drink from 1950s pub, the Elephant and Castle.

    Take part in old-fashioned street games, visit our vintage cinema and take a look at our incredible transport collection. A great way to spend an evening with family and friends.

  • A Message from Andrew Lovett

    Dear Colleagues,

    I was pleased to see the message to you all from Paul Belford, our Chair of the Museum Board, after we opened the Row of Six.  I hope it helped to show how much the Board is aware of the enormity of the project and the contribution everyone has made.  However, the contribution of every member of staff really kicks-in now, with much of the new development open, some of our new buildings trading, and new storylines being told.  It’s as though you all, the collective “client” now takes the reins.

    At the same time as this message of thanks, I have today recognised over 30 staff – with personal thanks from me – who have been at the centre of the creative process which has led us to this point.

    We will have all learnt new things and skills during this project, and that is a terrific legacy and resource for the Museum.

    Hi all,

    As some of you may already be aware, we are experiencing an increasingly large amount of spam emails from people identifying as members of our Leadership team.

    After investigating further with our IT department, we’re asking everyone with a bclm email address to be vigilant of the following:

    • Encourage everyone to check with IT if they’re unsure about the validity of an email
    • Look at the ‘from’ email (does it end in @bclm.com?)
    • Please never open attachments or reply straight away if you are unsure and always check with IT first

  • All Colleague Briefings – August 2023 -New Date Added!

    We have added an additional day to the all colleague briefings to allow anyone who has been unable to catch the other dates the opportunity to attend as well as those unavailable during the week.

    As part of our continual programme of ensuring engagement and communication across the Museum’s operational and strategic activity, we will be holding briefings to update all colleagues on the Museum’s progress and the plans for the remainder of 2023, a critical year following the opening of the row of six buildings in our new street. These briefings will take place on:

    • Tuesday 1st August 2023
    • Thursday 3rd August 2023
    • Saturday 5th August 2023
    • Wednesday 9th August 2023

    All the briefings will be held in the Museum’s Conference & Learning Centre (Hall 2), and will commence at 9.00, finishing at 9.30.  Many of you will already be scheduled by your line managers to attend one of these sessions. If you have not yet been scheduled, please contact your line manager.

    All contracted colleagues are mandated to attend these sessions. We would also strongly urge colleagues from both our volunteer and casual community to all attend.

    You only need to attend one of the briefing sessions.

    Refreshments will be provided in the Hall 2.

  • Halesowen College Employer Awards

    Halesowen College has highlighted the achievement of its cornerstone Employers with a special awards ceremony, where the Black Country Living Museum was presented with the ‘Supported Internship Employer of the Year’ Award.

    Representatives of the Museum, Ricki Boden, Volunteer Coordinator and Susannah Green, People & Culture Advisor, accepted the award on Thursday 13 July at a ceremony attended by James Morris, MP for Halesowen – for the work we have been doing in partnership with Halesowen College. We look forward to our next cohort of learners in September.

    Claire Hawkes, Supported Employment Coordinator said:

    “The Supported Internship of the year award was presented to BCLM for their constant and conscious effort to implement required reasonable adjustments to enable our supported interns to feel confident, engaged and productive within the setting. Each intern’s mentor received training and has worked meticulously with the Job Coach and young people to generate valuable resources tailored to the way each intern learns best. This has created an environment where diversity is celebrated, we are proud to continue to work with them as one of our cornerstone employers.”

    Concept: From gramophones to electric guitars, from Thomas Edison’s recordings to Elvis Presley. Explore the eras, Look, Listen and Feel to discover what will be your favourite style of music. This Summer Holiday we’re exploring the journey of music throughout the decades including industrial Folk songs, music sheets, the gramophones, the radio and MORE. Come and see the musical folk of the Black Country and join us for a song or two!

  • Aegon Pension Letter

    Aegon Pension Letter

    It seems that colleagues who are members of the Aegon pension scheme have recently received a letter in the post suggesting a new investment contract has started.

    Aegon have advised that this is an IT glitch which is currently being investigated and that the letter can be ignored.

    They have apologised for any confusion this may have caused.
