    Work-related stress is a major cause of occupational ill health that can cause severe physical and psychological issues for employees.

    If you:

    • Are struggling to cope with your workload?
    • Need more training to get your job done?
    • Need more support to get your job done?
    • Have problems within the team?
    • Lack control over your job?
    • Have conflicting priorities?

    Then talk to:

    • Your Line Manager
    • People & Culture
    • A Mental Health First Aider

    Safe Together at BCLM: Allergies

    This month, we are focusing on allergies in the workplace and what to do in the case of an emergency.

    • Please keep your food contained to prevent cross-contamination.
    • Use different utensils to avoid colleagues handing their food after yours.
    • If you do have an allergy, please tell others.
    • Check the ingredients of your food and be more thorough afterward when cleaning.

    Safe Together at BCLM: Slips, Trips and Falls

    For this month’s safety notice, we are focusing on slips, trips and falls and what to do in the case of an emergency.

    To reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls, please read the following:

    • Cleaning up or reporting spillages
    • Keeping walkways clear
    • Avoiding trailing wires
    • Reporting worn flooring
    • Wearing suitable footwear for the conditions underfoot

    Safe Together at BCLM: Incident Reporting

    For this month’s safety notice, we are focusing on Incident Reporting and what to do in the case of an emergency.

    If any incident occurs on site, please follow these steps:

    • Call for first aid assistance (if needed)
    • Phone the Duty Manager immediately
    • Make the scene safe
    • Collect information
    • Complete an incident form
    • Submit the form to the Duty Manager

    Preparing And Cooking Food – Staff Notice

    All staff and volunteers must only use designated break areas and equipment provided by the Museum, to prepare or cook food for consumption by themselves or their colleagues.

    Please note, all members of staff are instructed not to bring in their own cooking equipment into any of the staff kitchens, rest areas or anywhere else within the museum’s grounds.

    Food prepared or cooked for consumption by members of the public must be prepared in a designated catering kitchen by trained staff from the Enterprise team. Any change to this needs to be requested via your line manager who will liaise with Janet Brennan in the first instance to assess the safety and suitability of the request. A decision will then be made as to whether the cooking can go ahead with the correct safety measures in place, or whether the request will be declined and other options considered.

  • Safe Together at BCLM: Fire and Emergency Evacuation Procedures

    Our Fire and Emergency Evacuation procedures have been updated to incorporate the new Visitor Welcome Centre, and also the Elephant and Castle, into our emergency evacuation plan.

    To enable this the Zones and Assembly Points have been updated and we will have 8 zones with the VWC and top of site becoming Zone 1, Rolfe Street becoming Zone 2 and so on with other current zones moving up by one.

  • Safe Together at BCLM: Burns and scalds

    Each month we will be implementing safety notices to ensure all staff at BCLM are kept as safe as possible. This month will focus on preventing burns and scalds. 

    There are steps we can all take to make certain we all stay safe when we, or those around us, are cooking or working with fire and heat.

    1. Wear suitable clothing – Ensure you wear suitable gloves and long sleeves as appropriate.
    2. Take your time – Do not rush any task involving heat.
    3. Be mindful of what others are doing – Don’t distract those handling hot objects or working with fire.
    4. Be vigilant – Follow risk assessments and report any concerns to your manager.
    5. See it, report it – Report any accidents immediately so that first aid can be provided
