Did you know that there are currently 14.1 million disabled people living in the UK and 19% of working age adults are disabled?
Curating for Change is looking to transform the museum sector by creating a cultural shift in attitudes towards disability. It will start to address the significant gap in access and employment across the heritage sector which, to date, had been largely ignored.
Disabled people are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled people. The inequalities are further accentuated within the museum sector workforce, with only 4% defining as D/deaf or disabled.
Black Country Living Museum is proud to support Curating for Change and welcomes Claudia Davies as part of this initiative. Claudia joined the Museum on Thursday, 31 August. Welcome, Claudia!
“Hi, my name is Claudia. I am 22 years old and I have just graduated from Durham University with a Masters degree in International Cultural Heritage Management. I am very excited to be joining the Black Country Living Museum as part of the Curating for Change programme. I am passionate about representing underrepresented groups in museum collections because I am deaf myself.” – Claudia.
We are pleased to welcome Helen Farrell and Ranjit Dhaliwal, who joined the Cleaning & Porterage Team as Site Cleaners last week.
Jake Thompson, starts with us this week as Apprentice Electrician. Jake will be working alongside Ed Sidaway, Electrician, and attending Dudley College whilst he completes his apprenticeship.
With the opening of the Elephant & Castle earlier this month, we welcomed several new casual Enterprise Team Members. In addition, we have also had a number of casual Historic Charters join us.
Sadly, Sarah Bradshaw, Assistant Costume Manager, has decided to move on to a new adventure at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, and will be leaving BCLM on 2 September.
We also say goodbye to Julie Westwood from the Enterprise Team on 9 September, who has also decided to move on to new pastures.
I am sure you will join the Museum in welcoming our new colleagues and bidding a fond farewell to our leavers.
Claudia Davies will be joining us at the end of the month in our Collections Team on a long term work placement as part of the Curating for Change initiative.
We are pleased to welcome Claire Packer and Izzy Taylor who joined us earlier this month.
Claire joins us as Head of Audiences of Communications, bringing a wealth of experience in marketing and communications, having most recently worked at the University of Birmingham as Communications Manager.
Izzy joins us as Public Programme Producer. Izzy most recently worked at China Plate Theatre as an Engagement & Participation Producer and prior to that worked at Birmingham Hippodrome.
Sadly, Adam Craig who recently joined as Museum Enterprise Manager, decided to leave his post after a very short tenure.
We are delighted to have made two appointments to the Museum’s Board of Trustees, who will be bringing a wealth of experience to the Museum. Read on below to find out more about each of our new Trustees, Louise and Tarlok.
Louise Jones
Louise is currently the Chief Finance Officer at Dudley College of Technology and has worked in the Further Education sector for over 20 years, in Birmingham and the Black Country. In addition to being a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, she holds a degree in Economics and Management from Cardiff University and a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education from Wolverhampton University. Louise has a keen interest in contributing to the regeneration of Dudley town centre through her work at the College and at the Museum, particularly ensuring that young people from all backgrounds are able to get full access to education and the important heritage of the Black Country.
Tarlok Singh Mander
Tarlok is a Chartered Global Management Accountant and works as a Finance Manager at Amazon where he is responsible for some of Europe’s largest warehouses. He has over a decade of experience working in finance functions across the public and private sectors, including at Network Rail and Jaguar Land Rover, with expertise in driving operational efficiencies and providing advice on large-scale capital projects. Tarlok grew up in Walsall and studied at Wolverhampton Grammar School after which he completed an undergraduate degree in Money, Banking and Finance at the University of Birmingham. Tarlok is a sports enthusiast and currently coaches boxing classes after competitively boxing for nine years himself.
We are delighted to welcome a number of new starters this month.
Carmel Roper joins us as Duty Manager, working alongside Kevin and John. Carmel has previous duty management experience with Compton Verney and Midlands Arts Centre and has also previously worked as a Tours Manager for the BBC.
Tracey Ledward and Lana Grinko join us as Museum Welcome Administrators and will support the new Visitor Welcome Centre when it opens. Both Tracey and Lana have a wealth of customer service and administration experience.
Louise Weaver joins us as a Site Cleaner. Louise has an array of experience having previously worked in hospital, schools, offices and hotel settings.
In addition we also welcome a number of new casual colleagues over the coming week within our Enterprise and Admissions & Welcome teams.
Jenny Gilbert, Researcher left on 13 May 2022 and is relocating with her partner to Sheffield.
Sara Gibbins, Visitor Receptionist, will be leaving at the end of her fixed term contract this month.
Other leavers include David Kruczek (Kitchen Manager) and Andrew Smith (Painter).
