    Red By Night – Event Relevant Information

    Internal Event Description: 

    Exploring Living Industrial History, when the factories and industry in the area made the Black Country ‘Red By Night’! Featuring steam action, industrial demonstrations, and (for the evening event) live entertainment. 

    Buildings will operate as normal but with a particular focus on industrial buildings and relevant characters. We will have more industrial buildings open, such as Lenches and the lady chain makers, as well as operating the Anchor Forge and colliery engine with steam.

    Relevant information for the event:

    Talking points in these buildings will also consider the environmental impact of the region’s industrial history. We will have steam engines positioned across the site over the weekend, and we will also be launching and showcasing the new Industrial Quarter!

    We are thrilled to share some exciting news with you all! This year, we achieved our highest participation ever in the ticket swap scheme, and it’s truly wonderful to witness so many of our colleagues getting involved and expressing their excitement.

    With such overwhelming participation, it’s understandable that not everyone was successful on the ballot. If you were not successful, please know that we have reached out to each individual personally via email to notify them.

    For those who were successful, congratulations! Your tickets await you at the People & Culture Office. Please feel free to drop by at your convenience to collect them.

    Once again, a big thank you to everyone who participated. Your enthusiasm and engagement are what makes the Museum culture so vibrant and enjoyable.

    National Lottery Open Week

    Once again we are excited to be taking part in National Lottery Open Week! Taking part in this national campaign gives us an opportunity to say a big thank you to National Lottery players, whose support makes arts and cultural projects possible via the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

    Our offer is free entry for Lottery players on Friday 15 March. Visitors can book via our website and details about how to book can be found here.

    We are expecting our free day to be popular with visitors, with almost 800 booked in so far for a bostin’ day out!

    Please be advised that due to the Easter bank holiday, March pay date will be on Thursday 28 March 2024.

    To support you in planning your finances, please note that there will be a 5 week gap between February and March pay dates.

    As a reminder, the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) can provide advice and tools on managing finances.

    You can access the EAP service by calling 0800 756 0861 and quoting ‘Black Country Living Museum’ and ‘Perkbox’ or you can access the EAP portal via the Perkbox app/webpage.

    Exciting news!

    We are teaming up with The National Express to offer all colleagues a Try-before-you-buy ticket to encourage new passengers onto the region’s buses.

    The incentive scheme offers colleagues the opportunity to sign up for 4 weeks of free travel. 

    It is hoped that this scheme will encourage more people to make the long-term switch to bus travel and help keep more bus services on the road, fewer private cars, and reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the West Midlands, helping to achieve the #wm2041 goal of a net zero carbon region in two decades.

    This incredible incentive is available through a Swift card or mobile app.

    Are you a classic car enthusiast? Do you own a vintage vehicle? Then we need you!

    We are reaching out to our wider community to ask if you would be interested in showing your vehicle and contributing to our programmes – whether that be a car, bus, motorcycle or even a lorry!

    If you would like to help, please complete our expression of interest form. 

    The deadline for submission is Sunday 24th March. Feel free to share this with your friends and family, if you know someone who might be interested we’d love to hear from them.

    New opportunity: Animal Assistant

    We are looking to increase the pool of people who support feeding the animals and occasionally to work alongside our Animal Handlers to provide exercise and care for the horse, pony, pigs and chickens on site.

  • Guidance for Progress Discussions

    Guidance for Progress Discussions

    Progress Discussions are the Museum’s formal process of giving and receiving feedback with regards to the contribution each one of us makes in our role.  What does this mean for you?

    • For salaried roles in particular, Progress Discussions also include the process of setting clear objectives going forward. All Salaried teams should have ‘Team’ objectives and individual objectives should be aligned to these. Many of your functional leads will be in the process of setting team objectives, or may already have done so. You should therefore expect clarity on your individual objectives between now and the end of March (or by the end of April for those teams heavily impacted by the opening of the Industrial the Industrial Quarter). Please liaise with your line manager in your next 1-1 to agree timelines for your objectives to be set. You should expect 4 Progress Discussions over a calendar year:

                      1) By the end of March

                      2) June.

                      3) September.

                      4) December.

    • For hourly paid, contracted employees, we are in the process for launching and communicating the format of Progress Discussions to Line Managers of these teams. Towards the end of March, expect to be communicated regarding the application of Progress Discussions for hourly paid contracted roles. Besides the casual opportunities for feedback and support, all contracted employees should have formal and recorded meetings to discuss expectations of your role and developmental needs, including a Wellness Plan, to support your ability to deliver an excellent visitor experience.
