  • Sugar and Spice (May Half-Term) – programme overview

    Event Overview

    Dates: Saturday 27th May – Sunday 4th June

    Concept: Sweet or savoury? Sugar or spice? Take a trip down memory lane with us and reminisce about your favourite flavours and sweet treats from times gone by this May Half Term! Learn all about the nation’s sweet tooth, the impact of rationing and how the flavours we know and love today arrived in Britain. After using their trail to guide them around the site, visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite flavour in the VWC and enter the chance to win a prize!

    Tickets are available directly from the Sales and Ticketing office in Canalside (as you walk into Canalside, take a left and make your way past the Marketing team).

    You will recieve 50% off on up to four tickets for each event.

  • All Colleague Briefings April 2023

    As part of our continual programme of ensuring engagement and communication across the Museum’s operational and strategic activity, we will be holding briefings to update all colleagues on the Museum’s progress and the plans for 2023, an exciting year for the launch of further Forging Ahead buildings. These briefings will take place on:

    • Tuesday 25th April 2023
    • Thursday 27th April 2023
    • Wednesday 3rd May 2023

    All the briefings will be held in the WI and will commence at 9.15, finishing at 9.45. Many of you will already be scheduled by your line managers to attend one of these sessions.

    All contracted colleagues are mandated to attend these sessions. We would also strongly urge colleagues from both our volunteer and casual community to all attend.

    You only need to attend one of the briefing sessions.

    Refreshment will be provided in the WI.

    If you have any trouble signing up for the briefing because you do not have a BCLM email address, please speak to your line manager who will be able to add your name for you.

    If you have a question you would like to be asked, there are slips in rest areas that can be returned to a member of People & Culture or deposited in the black box outside of the People & Culture in Canalside.

  • Our underground mine experience

    Our underground mine experience

    Some of you may have seen a photograph on our social media platforms last night – a photo of a mine safety lamp standing proudly on a heap of coal. This is the start of a social media series of images and videos that will tease the reopening of ‘Into the Thick’, our underground mine experience.

    Although we are not confirming a date to the general public yet, we are aiming to have the underground mine experience open within the next month.

    Please do share our social media posts to help build excitement, but please don’t share the date of the reopening on social media yet.

    More information will be shared over the coming weeks for those who have never experienced ‘Into the Thick’.

  • Updated Smoking Policy

    Dear Colleague,

    Please find attached a revised and updated Smoking Policy applicable to both Staff and Visitors, together with a map of the designated smoking areas.

    Please read the policy in full. Key points include:

    • Staff & volunteers (Colleagues) cannot smoke anywhere on site other than the staff only designated smoking zones. These are the staff area of the original car park and on the towpath directly behind the Bottle and Glass. Staff should NOT go across the canal bridge to the Dudley Canal Trust (DCT) and use their designated smoking area, as this will lead to conflict with the DCT.
    • Visitors can not smoke in any building, semi-closed buildings or locations.
    • Visitors should be gently directed to only smoke or vape in visitor designated smoking areas, which are behind the Newcomen Engine and the the far side of the lifting bridge by Brown’s Bridge. There will be a clear sign on the fence/wall and a galvanised bucket filled with sand at each location.
    • In the interest of staff safety , please only signpost visitors to the Visitor Smoking Designated areas. Signposting should be done in a mindful and respectful manger. If visitors ignore your suggestion, please do not persist.
    • The only instance when a visitor can be instructed to not smoke is if they are entering a building with a live cigarette or vape.
    • All colleagues should always remain calm, professional and polite in their communication to visitors.
    • For the avoidance of doubt, Staff & Volunteers cannot smoke in the visitor designated smoking areas.

    The Black Country Society exists to promote interest in the past, present and future of the Black Country (https://www.blackcountrysociety.com/).

    They are looking for new members to join their Committee, who can contribute to the Society’s successful development and expansion in the future, particularly in areas such as community engagement, public relations and organising events.

    Preparing And Cooking Food – Staff Notice

    All staff and volunteers must only use designated break areas and equipment provided by the Museum, to prepare or cook food for consumption by themselves or their colleagues.

    Please note, all members of staff are instructed not to bring in their own cooking equipment into any of the staff kitchens, rest areas or anywhere else within the museum’s grounds.

    Food prepared or cooked for consumption by members of the public must be prepared in a designated catering kitchen by trained staff from the Enterprise team. Any change to this needs to be requested via your line manager who will liaise with Janet Brennan in the first instance to assess the safety and suitability of the request. A decision will then be made as to whether the cooking can go ahead with the correct safety measures in place, or whether the request will be declined and other options considered.

  • People News Update (22/06/22)

    Welcomes

    This month we’re delighted to welcome Adam Craig as our new Museum Enterprises Manager. With over 20 years in catering and hospitality, Adam brings a wealth of experience to our Enterprise team, including senior management responsibility for a number of food & drink units at the university of Birmingham.

    We also welcomed Nathan Poole as a Site Cleaner, who has plenty of cleaning experience from his previous role in a  chain of dental practices.

    In addition we also welcomed a number of new casual colleagues within our Car Park team.

    A reminder that Carmel Roper joined our Duty Management team last month.

    Next month Claire Packer and Izzy Taylor will be joining us in the roles of Head of Audiences & Communications and Public Programme Producer respectively.

     

    Farewells

    Deborah Watkins, Collections Assistant, left earlier this month to take on a role at Bewdley Museum supporting their front-of-house function.

    Other leavers this month include Jenny Homeshaw (Corporate Development Manager).

     

    Other news

    Nadia Awal has now moved to full-time hours in the Interpretation & Research team.

    Sarah Bradshaw (Assistant Costume Manager) will be made full-time permanently from 1 July 2022.

    Beat the heat!

    Beat the heat this week!

    As we move into Summer, and with a forecast for high temperatures this week (temperatures are due to hit highs of 28 degrees this Friday), all staff are reminded to:

    • Dress appropriately for the weather and avoid heavy or tight fitting clothing,
    • Utilise shade from buildings, awnings or umbrellas wherever possible and especially between 11am and 3pm,
    • Use at least factor 30 sunscreen with a 4-star UVA rating if you are working outside and reapply during the day,
    • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated: water bottles can be refilled from any cold tap in kitchens/staff areas,
    • Open windows and doors (but not fire doors) to help create a breeze.

    In very hot weather Team Managers will bring round water bottles and sunscreen to their team as needed.
